Whats with all the 5.9 guys here on the 6.7 forum?
How else are we supposed to find out what's going on with the 6.7s? I agree, most of the bashing is from 6.7 owners. If they get the bugs out of 6.7 emissions I'm sure it will be my next truck, too. I also hope the 6sp autos hold up so I can have some faith in an auto again. I bought the first year CR but only after watching the 03+ forum for a couple years. That's just the way I do things - no impulse buying! Craig
So far it seems like a good engine. I don't like that you can't pull the DPF off though.
As a a matter of fact I do have something to add here. I'm going to post a new thread
.
Technically it says:
3rd Gen Engine and Drivetrain -> 2007 and up (45 Viewing)
6.7 liter Engine and Drivetrain discussion only. PLEASE, NO HIGH PERFORMANCE DISCUSSION!
But who's reading?

Man, some of these 6.7 owners are cranky. I wonder why?
I wanted the 6.7 when I went for a test drive. I couldn't afford it up here though. (We still have $.65 on the dollar prices with a $.95 dollar.) I think the DPF is a great idea. However, it should be built into the exhaust manifold so it would run 300degrees hotter right from the get go. They could cut the retardation of the advance for the regen a bunch, as well they could cut back the final injector (regen) pulse so they wouldn't drop the mileage as bad. This would also allow the recovery of some of that wasted regen energy to be grabbed by the turbo instead of someones paint job. This would also mean, the exhaust that flows back through the EGR to the intake would be
CLEAN do you hear me
CLEAN and not full of coal. (You get no warranty if you run with out an air filter, but they can dump that crap back in to the cylinders. What's with that.) Anyone know where to forward this to Cummins or Dodge. Tell them I'll work for cheap. (The first of the QMCDT Series of the Bluetec Cummins Trucks, Thank You.)

i enjoy reading the 5.9 guys posts about the 6.7l. Apparently they are junk engines and always in the shop. there are NOT members here with cab/chassis trucks that have well over 50,000 miles and seem to have little to no problems. Its all a lie.
Also, Ford owns Cummings, and the 68re is a renamed allison

I'm new here too. I've been visiting here for months seeking answers to various things but decided I needed to join and get some answers on
the new Bully Dog Pup that's out for us.
I bought my 6.7, 6 speed manual, 3.73, CC mid March. Single cab,
CM Hauler Bed, work truck.
From mid March to July 5th I have put 52,700 miles towing 5th Wheels and TTs from Indiana to all over. I have had absolutely no problems or real complaints with the 6.7 execpt high rpm's at highway speeds using the 6 speed manual. I think adding a Gear Vendor will be my only logical ($3,000 ouch) solution for that.
The only lights I have had is one that came on when hooking up trailer light while engine was running. That screwed up my Left Turn Signal until reflashed. Was told by Dodge Service to always kill engine and have ignition off while plugging 7pin connector.
The other light was letting the fuel filter go too long before changing. I changed the filter out myself at next Flying J parking lot, solved problem but had to get a dealer to reflash to get light off,,,$55 charge for that.
What brought me to the forum,,, I just bought a Bully Dog Pup and was told by BD that I had to get a dealer to upgrade to the 18-033-07 version but can't do that until Monday. I am working on getting my fuel milage better and the BD aquisition will hopefully help there,, more so than looking for more power.
I have also deleted my muffler but haven't checked yet to see if that helps mpg. I can't tell any difference in the sound after delete.
My whole world revolves around working on better fuel milage so I'm wide open for suggestions for that. Even 5.9 folks can chime in.
I am use to a few of the 5.9 bunch with the "mine's bettern yours" thing.
I belong to a couple of Yahoo Dodge Cummins Groups and went through that but it has settled down a little. Of course the Yahoo Groups are mostly 5.9 folks but happy to join this forum for obvious reasons. I still enjoy the Yahoo discussions for general Cummins stuff and have recieved a lot of help but most folks here can obviously relate better to 6.7 discussions,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If few here with Bully Dogs read this thread I might post another thread on that to see what results they are getting on mpg, power, etc. I appologize ahead for a double post of sorts.
Sorry about long winded intro,
jerry

I had love my 6.7 and might own another one in the future but intill they get better fuel mileage I wont buy another one. I had set my cruise every time I went to work at 65 and it was a 140 mile round trip and the most I could get out of a tank is 410 miles on a tank. I know it had only 8500 miles on it but my new 5.9 with 2500 is getting little over 600 miles to the tank and I reset my my trip every time so I am not going by the computer. It a big difference in fuel mileage for me the much as I drive back in forth to work. So I hope it get better for yall 6.7 owner cause I am glad I could still switch back.
That is a big difference and switching back to a 5.9 is understandable.
Since i got the 6.7 in March, I get a little over 17 driving 65-70, non towining, flat, level, no wind conditions, cruise on.
The only thing I've done so far to work on my mpg is added an air dam to the front bumper. I think that got me about an extra 1 mpg,,,maybe a little more.
Checking my towing mpg is all over the map beings I hitch up to something different every time. But checking it, it's alway bad imo. Different weight, length, 5th wheel, travel trailer, flatlands, hills, mountains, etc etc. I think the worse I've gotten towing is about 7 or 8 mpg. I don't even check it anymore, it's depressing at todays fuel prices, especially out west.
To stay on topic, I like the 5.9 a lot. I drove a Armor 40' mobile clinic, 5.9 ISB, for three years for our local university hospital and I was pleased with it. I didn't put but about 60k miles on it in those three years but it was trouble free. I had some electrical issues with the fuel pump that put me on the side of the road for a few hours but as well as I can remember that was it.
When I bought my 3500 CC back in March and had a choice to go with the tried and proven 5.9 or roll the dice on the 6.7. But I wanted a new Chassis Cab and really had no choice. But as far as having serious problems with it I've been lucky I suppose.
My only regret is the high rpm with the 6 speed manual, 3.73 rear end set up. To maintain 2000 rpm I have to drive 63mph,,,that's hard to do even towing a large 5th wheel.
After thinking of solutions as
regearing rear end only 5% better rpm for $1k,
larger tires probably less than 5% better rpm
Gear Vendor, $3000 but 22% better on rpm.
As bad as I hate to plunk down 3 grand, the GV is my best solution for better
mpg. Not to mention 20% less wear and tear on my Cummins.

jerry, I'd just bump up the tire size a little when they are due if the look doesn't bother you... Some people go for that look though. Can't you go to a 235/85?
One a side note, I thought they "fixed" the G56 for the 6.7?

i try not to hate on anyone but i think that its the majority of 6.7 guys that hate on 5.9 guys.. Not because I own a 5.9 but I think its because the site is predominatly 5.9.. for now they (6.7) are kinda the black sheep and the many problems people have had with the 6.7 only makes it worse. I am a dodge owner and so are all you 6.7 owners.. for the upbeat 6.7 owners I thank you for buying the new product to keep our brand and hobby alive. As for the negative 6.7 owner who complains cuz us 5.9 guys are in your forum I think you should show some respect because even though the 6.7 is a new product its very similar to the 5.9. Us 5.9 guys who have been in the game for a while might be the one to help you out one day.
Joe T,Going to a larger tire size for lower rpm was one of my first thoughts.
I dropped by my local GoodYear shop to check it out.
The first thing the tire expert did when he walked up to my dualy was
run his hand between the two tires and said that if I went to the next
taller size tires they would be too wide for duals and rub together.
Atleast he didn't have taller tires with same width that wouldn't rub
and he wasn't that familiar with other brands that might.
Before all that,,I did the arithmetic on bumping up to 19.5" and that wouldn't
have lowered my rpm very much. A few % as well as I can remember.
I also talked to a gear shop about regearing my rear end from 3.73. The expert there said he could go two steps better but that wouldn't lower the
rpm but about 5%. The Gear Vendor I mentioned seems to be the only
parictical solution albeit a bit expensive but necessary for as many miles as I have to travel. And I suppose being a work truck making money it seems
a little more like a business investment rather than a funsy thing.
Atleast that's the way I'm spinning it in my mind to help my own feelings.
The factory Gear Vendor rep emailed me and he said,,

Jerry, our overdrive will drop your engine RPM by 22% exactly. This means your 2200RPM will become 1715RPM. There is no doubt that this will greatly improve your milage when running empty. Expect over 20% improvement in fuel economy
(his "running empty" statement meaning non-towing)
______________________________
The 22% reduction in rpm probably won't equate to 22% better fuel milage
or 22% reduction in wear and tear on the 6.7. Time will tell on the milage,
but the wear and tear %, I will never really know. But it makes sense to me
that it should be a good bit less w&t.
