Used 2007 Dodge 2500 - Should I buy it?
 

I've never owned a diesel, but I'm looking to get one. Right now, I have a 2008 Silverado 1500 that I really like, but I recently bought a 30' travel trailer and would like to upgrade to a diesel for towing.

The local dealer here just got in a used 2007 Dodge 2500 with the 6.7L. It's only got 25,000 miles on it and it looks almost like new (except for some fairly heavy rust on the exhaust system). I took it for a test drive and wow! It's got the power - and the built-in jake brake is nice too.

However, the dealer told me that it was a manufacturer buy-back due to the check engine light. That's scary. However, he said it's been fixed and the remainder of the warranties still apply.

He also said that there's an accident reported on the carfax report, but that all the systems, frame, etc look good so it might have just been a scratch or something.

I like the truck and the price is right, but I don't want to end up with something that's going to fall apart on me. I can probably use the buy-back and carfax as leverage to get an even lower price, but I don't know.

Can anyone give me your thoughts? Should I look elsewhere? Should I try to get an older 5.9 or another brand instead?

id walk away from it. if you were ever to sell it, the buy back stuff and the carfax is going to kill you on resale value. as far as other models it really depends on what your needs are, the 6.7's like to be run harder to keep the emmissions stuff happy compared to the 5.9's. i like my 5.9 alot but an exaust brake and 6 speed auto would be nice too. i would stay away from fords but chevy make a good diesel trans combo that you might want to look into. good luck

I had a 2007 6.7 and got rid of it because of the emissions problems. I have a2007 5.9 and no problems so far. The 6.7 engine itself is awsome, just the DPF and emissions are a pain. Find a 5.9 or get a dpf delete if you decise to go with the 6.7.

Yeah....stay away from the 6.7 all together i say. the emissions are a nightmare. and like isb07 said...the resale value will be almost nothing with that carfax and that buy-back deal. If you get a dodge make sure its a 5.9 cummins. If you get a chevy/gmc...get a 2006 or newer duramax. And dont get a ford.

You can get exhaust brake installed on a 5.9 diesel also. I have worked for Dodge over 25 years and I have seen first hand all the changes with Cummins engines. These new 6.7L Cummins are the best so far. The emissions problem is gone on the new 2009. The first generation had sooting problems but all these issues have been fixed. I see very few sooting problems now. If you think you can drive the 6.7L truck to the store and home.... think again. This truck is not for you. It is made for one thing towing heavy loads. Excessive idle time and no load will cause soot with any diesel engine. You will never see any black smoke out the tailpipe because of PDF capturing all particulate matter. 2007 EPA approved on emmisions all 50 states. Runs on ultra low sulfer diesel fuel only, which will be the only fuel you can buy for diesels soon. If you need a grocery getter then buy a Chevy.[laugh]

a little more info would go a long way. what trim level, cab configuration, 2wd or 4wd, mileage and anything else you know it has. not to be nosy, but what are they asking for it? as for the buy back, i wouldn't be afraid of that. have a dodge dealer or someone on here run the vin to see exactly what warranty work was done and what issues it's had. my money would be on emissions problems. there is no real fix other than doing the deletes and/or really working the truck. i'd be more afraid of the accident than the buy back. see about getting more info on that. with the buy back and accident, and crappy market thrown in, you should be able to STEAL that truck if you really want it! just remember that you can buy a new one for $13k-$15k below sticker.

From what I found...There are alot of cheap 07 & 08 6.7 L's out there..The 5.9's are bringing about the same $ or more than the 07 & 08 6.7's... After alot of reading .. I decided to stay away from 6.7 & went for the 5.9 L

The dealer didn't want to negotiate on that truck. They were asking blue book which is $31800 for excellent condition on that truck (not for a buy-back that was in an accident). It is an SLT with an auto trans and a long bed. I pulled the records and the truck was brought back for a check engine light and the accident was a minor fender-bender at a stop light (but the dealer didn't know that). I offered 20K and the dealer laughed at me and didn't even come back with a counter offer. After talking to him a couple days later he said the best he could do was 29K and he wouldn't even offer the 'average' value for my trade in. He didn't want to deal at all.

So I went to another dealer and bought a new one today after shopping around for a couple of weeks. I'm in New York not to far north of NYC and there really aren't that many used ones around here. I ended up getting a new 2009 2500 SLT short bed with the 6.7L and automatic 6-speed in inferno red. It's a sharp truck. I got it for close to 13K off MSRP.

congrats......that dealer was smoking some good stuff to have the balls to ask that price!! blue book means nothing in this market. it's whatever current auctions are bringing in that will determine book value. and for these trucks it's nowhere close to book. enjoy your new ride.
