synthetics
I'm sure this has been asked before but I'll ask anyway.
I have been running Amsoil in my trucks for years it seems to work just fine. On my 09 (6.7) they (amsoil) reccomend that you change oil as per OEM drain intervals. I think that the synthetics are better than regular oil for the engine but is the cost really worth it. It cost me $94.00 to change my oil with the amsoil, thats oil 12 qts. and filter and doing it myself.
What does it cost you guys to do and oil change ?
Do you think that over the long haul running Synthetics is the way to go ?
Thanks for you feedback.

Very good question. Sythetic is expensive, I have been debating the same thing. Fuel dilution can be a problem with the newer 2010 emissions trucks. Probably would just stick with regular dino oil on a new truck. Just not really worth it.

I would do a search for 6.7L engine making oil. You will see a lot of users complaining about the oil level increasing do to fuel dilution and soot in the engine oil.
My cost for an oil change when I do it myself is less then $50. This is 3 gallons of oil and new filter.
If you want to use synthetic oil then block the EGR.

How long you keep your vehicles for?
Lots of variables to consider, but for a vehicle with all of the emissions junk and driven short distances - probably going to have a fuel dilution issue...

If you trade your truck often, then synthetic oils may not be your ticket. On the other hand, if you run your vehicle for ten years and say 300,000 or so miles, synthetics will offer more protection over the long haul. In cold climates synthetic oil flows better and reaches pressure faster. But really changing the oil frequently along with the filter will prolong the life of the engine regardless of type. For what it's worth, I run Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 synthetic along with Fleetguard filters. The change interval that I use is 10,000 kms. I plan on owning the truck for 10 to 15 years. I'm averaging 40,000+ kms per year. An oil and filter change costs me about $100 CDN.

I agree with DWR. If you plan on keeping the truck long term then synthetic oil is the best investment. Synthetics can handle fuel dilution better than dino oil. You are correct that AMSOIL recommends OEM drain intervals because of the fuel dilution issues but it's possible to extend it with oil analysis.
