oil dirty after oil change-6.7 dodge diesel
 
Have a 2007 6.7 dodge diesel with 10000 km. Just had the first oil change done at dealer and checked it in the yard when i picked it up. The oil looked dirty. Anybody had the same thing happen? I'm wondering if they even changed the oil - they say they did and the filter too. Is this normal for this engine?

With the new emissions equipment (specifically the EGR), oil turning dirty quick is going to be the norm. Even with a bypass filter setup, I guess we should start expecting dirty oil soon after a change.

Welcome to DTR!
the 3rd gens will make the oil black instantly. the black is soot particles in suspension(floating in the oil). that is the oil doing its job. otherwise the soot will stick to the inside of the motor, and we dont want that.

I think Aggie has it right. The EGR may be the problem. That and a new engine that's not broken in yet. But it's not a 3rd gen thing in general. Mine goes 10,000 miles between changes and is only brown at that point, not black. For the first several thousand miles it is just clean.

I'd like to hear from more people with 6.7s about their experience with black oil. How quick?

yours is an 04, 3rd injection event isnt until 04.5, so you get brown, we get black.......
maybe i should have been more specific in my post.

But I thought this new emission system and crank-case filters and all these new bells and whistles were supposed to make this whole engine a clean running engine, not just the exhaust gasses. And with this new CJ-4 oil its supposed to be that much cleaner.
Can someone please post a link of the new components on this engine and how they all work?

My 6.7 gets the oil as others have said black, and I mean soon as you start the motor after an oil change... Really a sad thing if you ask me too. The EGR needs to be lost on these new motors as does the DPF...

I don't see how the EGR or the 3rd injection event would make the oil dirty sooner. Soot in the oil is from blowby. A loose engine that is worn out or one that is not yet broken in will have more blowby and get the oil dirty sooner. An engine that is working harder will do it to. EGR lowers the cylinder temperature, but how could that cause more blowby? The oil only catches the carbon that gets into the crankcase so the kind of oil should not have an affect. I wonder if the 6.7 filters the blowby and sends soot to the oil instead of the way the 305 does it with an open tube to the outside?

My Passat TDI gets the oil dirty soon too. I have been kind of disapointed because it is so much faster than my Cummins. But it has EGR, and no external blowby tube that I've seen.

The 325/600 and 325/610 engines also have a valvecover vent tube. The more fueling events causes finer soot particles that are not removed from the oil via the filter due to their small size. This is normal on my truck. Looking at my oil, Yeap it's oil. Only an oil analysis can tell you how good or bad it is. Just my .02.

IIRC the new 6.7 has up to 5 injection events and that will let the oil get black just as fast or faster then it does with the 3 injection events we have in the 2004.5 to 2007 5.9 engines.

Same happened to me... I have 1,500 miles on mine, but changed the oil at just under 700 miles. OK, call me crazy...[duhhh]

Anyway, checked it afterwards and yep... dark black! Also having the oil level vary too. Sat for hours and it was within range. Then checked it 300 miles later after letting it sit for hours again... then level was way over the full mark.

I yet to see a desiel with out black looking oil.Have been working for Mercedes my whole life and you can do an oil change and drive it around the block and the new oil will be black.I changed my oil on my new truck at 4,000 miles and its black.It just the way it is with a desiel

Not my CTD, as I stated earlier. My old Mercedes 300SD and my Ford 6.9 got the oil dirty fast, but they were smoky engines and the Mercedes had MANY miles on it. Also, when old black oil gets changed, the new oil gets dirtied by the black remains left in the crankcase.
