HELP! Need QUICK answer on fuel filter!

Hey, guys, here's my dilemma: Quite a while ago I had replaced the original fuel filter with a Fleetguard unit w/ replaceable filter element. The Geno's Garage part no. is FS43257. The replacement element is part no. FS43258.

I removed the filter yesterday and went to replace the element and noticed that the filter gasket on the new element (i.e., the smaller circular one that fits at the top) was much smaller than the original. The box the element came in IS marked FS43258, which should be the proper type for the FS43257 shell.

I'm wondering if someone at the factory put the wrong part in the box. Could it be that this element is for a MOPAR shell rather than Fleetguard?

Please answer ASAP as I'm afraid to use the truck if the fuel isn't going to be filtered properly. (I DO have a new, older-style 7-micron filter if I have to replace the Fleetguard). Thanks in advance....

I just checked the Geno's Garage website and found that the pictures of both the Fleetguard and MOPER filter elements were exactly alike (photo below). However, as I stated above, the element I removed from the shell had a much different filter gasket (larger).

This is the filter element I used to replace the original. I don't have a photo of the original but remember that the filter gasket was quite a bit larger (perhaps higher & fatter is a better description)

OK, I here's a photo of the original MOPAR filter (the type that came with the truck). The part no. is 05183410AA. Note the filter gasket at the top. It is much different from the picture above. Should I replace the Fleetguard filter with this one until someone comes up with an answer?

I switched from the original 1 piece filter to the new style seen here with no issues....

Thanks, Blake. What had me confused (I should have mentioned this) is the replaceable filter that came with the complete Fleetguard unit has a filter gasket exactly the same as the old filter. The NEW in box replacement element (FS43258) has a gasket similar to your photos.

Why did the original Fleetguard replacement element that came with the shell have a thicker gasket like the old-style filter yet the new (same P/N) replacement element appears much different? Hopefully, the gasket is contacting the housing as well as the original. I'm worried about any unfiltered fuel getting past the gasket.

That Im not sure about. I dont think that any unfiltered fuel will get past the gasket.

Peronally, on my rig, I dont worry about it at all, my stock filter is now just a prefilter for me, then it goes into a 2 micron Fleetgaurd spin on filter directly before the injection pump.

Odd indeed.

My MOPAR replacement filter that I changed in August looks like Blake's......

Can I assume that the MOPAR filter element is exactly the same as the Fleetguard? On Geno's website the pictures are similar. I still have no idea why the original Fleetguard replaceable filter that came with the shell has a much different gasket than the new replacement, although the P/N's are the same (FS43258). I'll order another replacement element and see if looks the same. I need to keep a spare, anyway.

Another thought: since both the Fleetguard and MOPAR filter elements are the same price that leads me to believe they're similar and interchangeable, although I can't swear to that.

FWIW, I spoke with a Cummins engineer today and she helped put my mind at rest.

It seems that early replaceable filter elements were supplied with a compressible foam gasket, which of course made it appear quite large. The newer filters now use a rubber gasket which, although appearing much smaller, accomplishes the same task as the earlier compressible foam type. A change in vendors evidently led to a change in gasket type. Hope this info may have been useful to some.

Glad there was an engineer around there that could clear it up for you. Makes good sense to me. The rubber is probably better and more reliable than the foam one I would think as well.

Anyone have a picture of the original stock filter? How can you tell the original canister filter from the newer replaceable element type? I bought a replacement element for mine and it looks like the white one pictured above. I one I took out looks similar except it is black and has a larger gasket on top. The new element seems about 1/16" of an inch too big to fit in the canister (I might be able to force it in), just want to make sure it is the right part first. The part number on the canister is 05183410AA.

Experienced changing out the fuel filter on my "New to me" 07 today and learned that unlike my 2000, one canister does not fit all. Picked up a Wix/Fleetguard/Cummins filter element and headed to the house to begin what turned out to be quite an ordeal. When I tried to use the 1/2" drive to get the canister loose, I found that the previous owner had rounded out the square hole. OK. Out came the rubber strap wrench. Got the thing off and saw a big FRAM on the side. Not to worry, I thought. Cleaned it up real good and attempted to put the WIX element in it. NO WAY-NO HOW! Thank goodness the auto supply was near by, and had the Wix element and canister combo in stock. Cost me $120 for the two filters, but the extra filter is sealed in a ziplock and ready for the next change. I can now rest easy knowing that I have clean fuel.
