Alternative to EGR tube plugging?
 

I'd like to hear from those who have unplugged their EGR and disconnected the cables that control flow of exhaust gas into the crossover tube. It is easy to do and seems like it should provide the same reduction in exhaust gas flow as plugging the crossover tube.

My concern is, will doing this cause the truck to go into limp mode?

I just unpluged the brown conection and am getting 2.5 miles more to the gallon. 18.5 2008 DC Dually 4.11 gears.

I've done that too. With good mileage increase.

Plugging or blocking off the crossover tube seems popular but why not pull off the cables that spin the valve that allows exhaust gas into the crossover.

Has anyone done it, my search did not find anything.

i've tried the unplugging of the egr valve control wires. i picked up between 2-3 mpg average.
i used to get 16 in town, 19 on hilly back roads, and 21 freeway at 63-68 mph.
same conditions with egr unplugged.
16 in town, 20-21 back roads, 23-25 mpg freeway, 63-68 mph.
3.73 auto 2x4 mega.

Huh, so for you it was the same effect. I'll leave it hooked up for now - I'm pretty happy with mileage, now that I unplugged!

You getting any codes from unplugging the egr valve? I wonder if there is a positioner on the valve to let the computer know if it opens or not. Just unlpugging the valve seems too easy. Dodge would have figured out a way around that one.

Unplugging the EGR trips a code P-0405-EGR Position Sensor Circuit Low. The trick is that the entire system is disabled with this unplug. If you unplug any of the other sensors or actuators, it will go into a limp mode.

Couldn't you just pull the pin out of the egr assembly? Just like show here. Just bolt everything back together. That way the assembly will think that it is still functioning correctly, but no valve opening

Have you done this yet Dog? I also read that Dodge is putting in newer ecm's into the older trucks to fix issues, so you guys could be in the same situation as the new trucks.

I have gained between 2 to 3 miles to the gallon after unpluging. Also added a 4040 areo turbine muffler didnt do much for millage but shure lets the heat out alot faster has to be better EGT. With better EGT will be better millage also. Also did not make it much loader with the 4040 but does sound good have a 6" by 14" tip. getting around 20 to 20.5 mpg.

No, pulling the pin out will trigger a bunch of other codes. The system senses intake air temp and throttle valve position to determine flow. If it thinks there is no flow you get the light with the lightning bolt and the DTC.

Thats not fun. They thought of everything. Where is the flow measurement and temperature measurement taken in the egr tube? Is it in the egr valve or at the exhaust manifold. Its probably just easier to slam in a 12vr and crank up the timing some.[laugh]

The temp sensor is just below the EGR valve on the back of the intake horn. The positioners have feedback loops so the ECM knows if they are fully operational or not. I got the lightning bolt light for just playing with the Servo valve on the exhaust manifold while it was idling.

Dog, have you removed the butterfly flapper on your truck? Its kinda hit/miss if its required. I just talked to edge about their race box for off-hiway trucks. They suggest that you remove the butterfly flapper. I've heard that the egr is cycled open/closed during normal operating to make sure that its still functioning correctly. Hows the smarty working for ya so far?
