6.7 Engine Issues??

Had a interesting conversation yesterday with a service manager at a Dodge dealer (won't say where) concerning buying a new vehicle. He said that Dodge is having so many problems with the '09 6.7 engine that they are just trying to nurse owners through the warranty period. Apparently, one of the biggest issues is head problems due to the excessive heat caused by the smog requirements. Have any of you heard the same or experienced more problems than the prior years with the 5.9? I have two 5.9's and was thinking about selling my '99 for a new rig.

Gee, I wonder why the forums don't seem to have all of these "troubles" reported.

We all know owners are bashful about reporting problems.

I think you need to catch your local Service Manager on his meds, not off.

I believe the 2009 6.7's are the same as the 07's and 08's which didn't have this problem. I agree with the previous post. The service manager is off his meds or he's out of a job because he is at a dealer who lost their contract with Chrysler. People like that is how the great rumors get started like "Ford owns 'Cummings' so you will be able to get a Powerstroke or a 'Cummings' in a Superduty next year." Heard that famous, popular one from a Ford service writer a few years ago.

Funny my buddy is the service manager at my local Dodge dealership and he told me the exact opposite. The 2009's are having less problems due to finally starting to get the bugs out with the flashes and stuff.

Thumbs up

I recently traded my 2003 3500 for a new 2009 3500. The dealer told me all problems with the 6.7L have been resolved and they have not had an engine check light in over a year. The '09 truck requires more maintenance such as a mandatory 6 month oil and oil filter change. I won't reach the 7500 miles in 6 months so I have to change the oil regardless of low mileage in 6 months. I can live with that.

The '09 is a far more complex truck than my '03 and requires careful study of the owners manual and diesel supplement to the owners manual. You need to learn the new truck in order to understand it and maintain it.

I really like my new truck and the automatic transmission is fantastic!

Good luck with your decision. There are good deals right now you won't see when the 2010's show up in late fall. I got 12,000 off window sticker price. Make sure the dealer updates any bulletins or flashes. The latest flash, which they had to add to my truck, is "AJ". The dealer complied with it and put a sticker on the underside of the hood. Make them prove to you that "AJ" has been done because it probably came out while your new truck sat on the lot.

Dodge's website is helpful if you use it, there is an owners section where you can type in your VIN to see if any bulletins are outstanding.

I always look around the shop when I take my truck in for service. I don't see any Cummins being worked on, but lots of Fords, some with the body pulled off the frame

You'll love the '09 over your '03. That's what I traded for my '09. awesome power, get the automatic. Exhaust brake is big help on grades. All +'s, no -'s!
See my earlier post.

Good Luck

the minus is the dpf, egr valve and all the other pollution junk on these trucks. I wish someone had warned me of all the extra maintainence these trucks require. I would have stayed with gasoline truck.

I have an 08 with 17k miles on it. No problems so far. I think if you have a bluetec engine you should be alright. The bluetec engine has some changes from the 07.5-early08 motor.

09's can still be ordered with the g56.

In the '10 spy pics there is one with a standard. I dont know what model but hopefully they continue. I love the 6spd auto but do miss my standard every once in a while.

My 07 now has 51,000 on it. Pulls my 13.5 fifth great. mileage is down a bit but I don't regret moving up from my chipped 2000.
