4 headlights...

Starting in June I have had 4 headlight bulbs go out. What may be going on? Expensive bulbs from NAPA. I thens to lose receipts when I am camping so I have bought all of them except for 1 that was replaced under warranty. Just had Dodge do one today when they changed oil. They did not find anything wrong except the bulb.

Are they Silver Stars? If so, stop buying them, they have a horrible life span. I've never got more than a year out of them and typically less than 6 months.

What are the best bulbs to put in? I have the 2 light HID system and am not impressed with them and wondered about going back to regular bulbs but good ones. The Silverstars aren't cheap by any means but if they don't last.

SIlverstars are short lived. They used to have the life hours on their website. Something like 350.
You want a good bulb then stay away from anything tinted. Tinting reduces lumen output.
Philips and Osram (not the Sylvania label) are the best bet.

What are the OEM bulbs? I'm on the originals at 103k and 8 years later with a lot of night time use.

That's bizarre. I've been running Silverstars for 2 years and no problems. Bought mine at NAPA Auto for about $25. Gotta have them on dark country roads

Silverstars are still a lot of money for a marketing joke. How many actually read their fine print?
30, 40. 50% more light and distance yadda, yadda, yadda. The fine print is "when compared to a worn standard halogen".

Did you touch the blub with your fingers when installing? they live a short life when you do!

Rons red Ram Dec 30, 2014 09:29 PM

At one time, Sylvania posted the lifespans of their lamps. Silverstars were 350 hours. You could buy a Wagner long life with close to 1,000. Probably what the manufacturer used in the first place. Remember, they compare based on a worn standard halogen. Halogens lose 20~30% output throughout their life. People replace the worn or dead bulb that they became accustomed to and viola. It's super bright.
There is nothing special about the output since they can't exceed the federal lumen limit. All they can do is offer hype and a blue tint then overpower the bulb to regain the lost lumens.

I recall a post on Bobistheoilguy regarding a class action lawsuit in reference to the underwhelming performance of the Silverstar and the Silverstar Ultra. Sylvania agreed to settle a class action suit regarding their false/misleading claims with respect to brightness and performance.

I put them (Silverstars) in our Mazda years ago and was not impressed at all. They have a very short lifespan. I even installed them using nitrile gloves. I gave up on the gimmicky bulbs after reading about them on the Daniel Stern website.

I guess the bulbs work better in some trucks and not others. I've had mine in for about three years w/ no problems. Knock on wood! ;)

Xtreme Power and Xtreme Vision bulbs by Phillips are the real deal…much brighter yellow/whitehalogen output with more then decent lifespan.

I have also had decent luck with GE Nighthawks. I believe their performance (brightness and beam pattern) to be better than standard bulbs and their lifespan has not disappointed me.
