07 Vs. 08 (mechanically speaking)
 

I have read a couple people say not to buy an 07, to buy an 08 and the only reason I have seen stated is simply do to the latest programming. As far I knew an 07 can get the up-to-date flash to fix the problems that they were having.
I bring this up because I have an 07.5 and haven't had much trouble with it other than a couple of flashes i had done. I know many people had problems in the beginning but from what i understood ( and please correct me if i am wrong) the flashes were to take care of those problems. I know i am not the only one that is satisfied with their 07.5. So i guess what i am trying to figure out is if there any mechanical difference in the engines or is it just the latest software that are making people say not to buy an 07.

In my opinion there are lots of people that make lots of uneducated statements that can't be supported by facts, so keep that in mind when you hear those things.

Yes, the 7.5's experienced a lot of CEL issues and some turbo problems because they were the first ones out. Some folks suffered unneccessarily with the 7.5's because a lot of the dealers didn't know how to work on them properly at the time (some still don't) and were guessing or making wrong diagnoses/repairs.

If you have a 7.5 6.7 and have the latest AX flash and a properly trained dealer tech you should have no problems. If your turbo hasn't failed yet then it probably won't. The 08 6.7's have a different ECM since they are on a different flash load than the 7.5's but I'm not sure it's a better ECM, may just be a from a different supplier. Other than that the only benefit of the 08's versus the 7.5's that I am aware of are some bells a whistle features like tire pressure monitoring systems, etc.

What manufacture date justifies it bieng an 2007.5? For an example I had an 2004 but it was an earlier made one so i guess it was a 305hp but at a later date they came out with the 325hp still made in 2004.

There are no mechanical differences between an 07.5 and an 08.

My guess is the 5.9 is the 07 and the 6.7 would be the 07.5.

On the '04s, the '04.5 was anything built January 1 or later. '04 was from the beginning of production for that model year to Dec 31, '03. The regulations change on the calendar year and the new models come out in about September so some of the new models can be built on the old regulations. This was the case for the smog requirements in '03 and '04, they changed on Jan 1 '04 and the '04.5 met the new requirements.

They had to build the engines before jan 1 in order to be able to make trucks on jan 1st. So you'll have build dates from december for a 1/2 model year release
