White smoke when on morning start up

I noticed the other day on start up my truck caughs up a white cloud as if its clearing its throat. On cold mornings it fires right up but has a rough idel for a second or two and then clears up but the white beltch has me worried. Wired thing is i go to work truck sits for the same amount of time till i fire her up to go home but does not have the white smoke on start up im confused as to why.

My previous trucks never did this all i can think of is that is has a leaky injector or it because the dodge dealer that sold it to me over filled it with oil its a bit over the full line gota change it this weekend. I just filled it up for the first time today since i baught her could a bad batch of fuel do this?

So whats ur guys take on it? Truck is a 06 3500 5.9 with 13,500 miles

Any feedback would be great

If its just a puff I wouldn't worry about it.Mine has done this for 2.5 yrs. Most mornings it doesn't but some it does.It did it with stock sticks, flux 1's and now flux 2's.Mine seems more likely to do it after sitting for a few days.It always clears up quickly and runs great.

Had the same problem last year. Go out in the mornings even when temperature was above 60 degrees and get a puff of white smoke. Drive it to work, go out for lunch 4 hours later and another puff of white smoke.

Took it to the dealer and they found two bad injectors. I guess as the truck sits they bleed fuel into the cylinders. Not much but just enough to cause the smoke. I got it back and thought I still saw some white smoke so I changed the fuel filter and it's gone.

What I would try first is just changing the fuel filter and then if it keeps it up start looking at injectors.

Mine has done it twice. The first time they replaced 1 injector. Wasn't very long after that when the problem started again. The dealer then replaced all the injectors. No problems since and it's been more than a year. I had heard that they got some bad injectors during manufacture. pcm

Do you run any type of fuel additive?

When I used Power Service my truck would smoke white upon start-up, after sitting for awhile.

The smoke went away after I stopped using additives.

sounds normal to me, whenever my trucks are cold they always blow white smoke in the mornings...and I am on my 4th one of each generation (one 12v second gen and one 24v 2nd gen). I know the warmer its gets I.E. the closer to summer it gets the less it smoke. NOt sure about what temp it stops but I would guess when it gets above than 50 deg. at night.

can you smell diesel in the oil? if you change it watch the level close to see if its making oil. injector issue could be why its over the fill line now...

Hemi nailed it. . .the only time I get white and rough idle on the morning start was when I had a dirty injector that got a little sticky leaked a little overnight. Both times on mine a good can of injector cleaner took care of it.

i highly recommend doing what TEXAS said, throw some power service diesel kleen in the tank and if u can, tow something heavy. these cummins r medium duty diesels, and imo when u dont run them hard by towing, they start acting up like this. unfortunely many people buy these trucks but dont tow anything or haul heavy and this happens.

Well i filled her up yesterday with fuel and added 12 ounces of PS to the tank she is still smoking. Called the dealer gona take her in MON night so the truck can sit over night and tech can hopefully get a fix on what the prob is. I would go tow something heavy but i dont own a trailer im just diesel junky i just love the sound and power and reliability of them and the decent mileage they get. Ill c if I can barrow my buddys travel trailer and give the truck a work out.

i dont know RICH, the reason i recommended this is that mine started doing this exact same thing not a month ago. we normally tow r fifthwheel 6 to 8 times a year, but we didnt do any towing this whole winter(last 6 months) and u could feel the truck slowly starting to run poorly. so i got some power service, hooked up the trailer and ran her hard. the truck runs like new again, my wife was surprised how much better it runs. so long story short it worked for me, but im willing to intertane the idea that diesel fuel is much more contaminated in certain parts of the country which is why some guys r having more problems than others.
