Exclamation Wheel hop during burn outs

Yesterday I was showing off my “new” (Only new to me; I bought it used) Van Aaken power to my dad. I took off kind of hard in third gear and I smoked the tires across the intersection. The problem is the excessive wheel-hop. It was like driving over rail-road tracks!

Any ideas to cure this problem? This is the first time I have ever done a burn out in my truck. It never had the power to do it before the VA!

Don't do burn outs while going over RR tracks. Add weight to the rear as they are very lite and break traction very easy.
It's a truck thing you'll get used to it.

Red face

then the ladder bars would probably fix that problem. Hop is caused by the rear winding up and unwinding really fast like a spring and causes the rear to hop. this can also cause broken pinions, u-joints and other expensive stuff to happen.
I bent a few leaf springs on my Jeep from this and the chevy 350 in it. Now it has a MORE ladder bar.

Ok, then no more burn outs...untill I get the ladder bars. I can't afford to break stuff like that.

Thanks for the help guys.

You just have to practice on your burnouts, they key is wheel speed, you need to get the wheels spinning before you take off, getting them spinning gets heat in the tires and softens them up so when you let off the brake they will keep spinning untill the speed of the truck catches up, go to thedieselgarage.com and watch some of those guys and you will see how they do it. Ladder bars will definatly help but not needed to do a good burnout.

I wasn’t trying to power brake, just a simple burn out. When I did this one, I was rolling about ˝ MPH when I revved it up and let the clutch out pretty quickly (I didn’t dump the clutch). It pulled really hard while burning out and hopping. I had to let out because the tach was in the red line, and the hop was really bad.

When I drove back around to see the marks, they were solid for about 20 feet. Then they changed to dashes. Maybe about a foot between each mark.

If I had a line-lock, I would try a power brake...or two.

Quick trick to stop wheelhop-clamp the front of the springs. You know, where that one leaf goes off up into space above the rest of them? Get a big u bolt (flat on bottom, NOT rounded) and use it to clamp all leaves together at the front of the springs. You'll need a flat piece of metal with two holes drilled in it to let the threaded studs of the u bolt go through. Then you just tighten the nuts up, pulling it all together until the leaves are sandwiched tightly together. Now, try your burnout again. I did that, and it completely solved my wheelhop in the dually. Cost: about $15. Time spent: About 1/2 hour.
