Well, It's started!! Engine is now ticking...
I noticed a couple days ago that when I'm pushing the truck a little bit that it sounds like I have an exhaust leak at the manifold. I don't really hear anything when I'm just tooling along though. It ticks a bit at idle but I figured it's just the injectors. I'm going to check the exhaust manifold and turbo area to make sure I haven't blown a gasket tomorrow....
Check this
I thought I had a tick one time.
It ended up being one of the blue isolators that support the injector supply line. It was loose and had vibrated and became worn and would tick with the vibration of the motor. I didn’t catch it in time and it caused the supply line to fatigue and crack. I had to replace it.
Hope this is all it is

Come on Dodgezilla! It's not like your a rookie on Cummins. But I'll bite for all the newbies. When you notice ticking and can tell the difference between valve noise (knock) and injectors (tick) the tips are beginning to accumulate carbon disrupting the fuel spray. Third gens are really easy to carbon up with the three injection events. Also the worst, as I have found (my rig)are the 03/04 HO injectors. They have eight smaller holes at a 143 degree spray angle compared to the 325/610 injectors which went back to a five holes tip and 125 degree angle. The only thing to get rid of tick, is just like a hot match to a real tick. Get that motor hot pulling, hauling, whatever. You need to exercise your horse. Don't ignore the fact that you are the proud owner of a true medium duty industrial motor designed to haul weight. When used light duty the injectors will carbon up just like a cold slow burning fire....enjoy it and take her for a romp!

Go hook on to something heavy (like this) and pull it around a while and up a few steep hills with your right foot buried deep in the carpet! That will get the EGTs up a little and clean up your injectors in no time.

I understand what the "Injector tick" is. This is pretty loud though. As I stated, it sounds like I have a leak in the exhaust manifold. Kind of like when I used to blow a header gasket on the old race car but it's only at higher rpms. For those of you that have the tick, is yours that loud and does it sound like that? The truck still runs just fine....
I did a search yesterday and read a couple of posts from guys with a similar sound but I didn't see where anybody had a cure.....
BTW, I only have 3200 miles on it. I find it hard to believe the injectors would be carboned up already. I have used PS/MMO in almost every tankful of fuel....

My wifes 04.5 has a pronounced tick. It was smoking real bad on cold start up. I took it to the dealer they tried a injector cleaning and it did nothing. They finaly did a test on the injector and found that one was bad and they replaced it. The smoking on start up went away and the fuel economy went up but the tick is still their. I have been trying to ignor the noise since is seems to run good. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Well, I don't feel any exhaust leaks so I am inclined to think it is the injectors but can they really be that loud?!?!?! As I said before, the truck still runs great so I'm not gonna worry about it. I just wish the engine made more noise, like a 2nd gen, so that I wouldn't even hear this......
I still love my truck....

Hey Dodgezilla.
Mine got to ticking some right around the same mileage, I was also using PS & MMO with every tankful. The tick went away somewhere around 8K and has not been back. I did nothing, changed nothing, tugged nothing. Funny part is, it almost seems like my power increased after the tick stopped? I have NO explination whatsoever about any of it. By the way, how are you and the quad doing? Time for some feedback from you. I am considering the STD model for my truck.

You could try two-stroke oil as an additive. Just make sure you get the low-ash TC-W3 oil. I think it takes at least 8 oz. per 30 gallons to start to quiet the injectors. You might have to go as high as 16 oz. per 30 gallons (that's 120:1).

Well this sounds like the sound that I had. That was the only way to describe it and as I read your post it was exactly how I had explained it to everyone. Mine had been making a noise like that through a set of new injectors, a new CP3, adding the FASS. I guess that I should have been looking a little more...

Well, I hope to "HE Double LL" that I didn't blow a headgasket already!!!!!!
I may try a different additive to see if that helps. It definitely doesn't sound normal.
As for the Quadzilla Std box, I have been running it on the 30hp level since I pretty much sit in traffic to and from work and can't really use anymore power than that. The box works great and even on the 30hp setting it makes a huge difference but it doesn't seem to come on as quickly as it did in the 03. Either way, I'm happy. I'm still learning how to properly drive this thing and she'll be a screamer once I get that figured out.....
