wal-mart supertech 15-40 diesel oil??

What is the technical data on this oil?
Why use it and why not use it?

I know all the things like not in my $40,000.00 truck, Use at your own risk type stuff but what about technical reasons. I'am looking for good solid reasons why not to use.

I did a flow test experiment on oils useing a walkin freezer set at different temps gravity flowing through an orifice.

Delo 400 15-40
Rottela T 15-40
supertech 15-40
pennzoil 15-40
cenex 15-40
They all flowed about the same at 0*, -8*, and -15*. The surprise came when I flowed Rottela 10-30, it flowed worse the colder it got.

I done one synthetic oil in 15-40 and that was amsoil, it flowed about twice as fast as compared to the other 15-40 oils.

I know any 5-40 would probably flow faster than any 15-40 but I want to use 15-40 until the engine is broke in. Yes I know many have used synthetic oil before recommended breakin without any ill effects. I just want to use 15-40 for now and if no one can come up with a good technical reason why wal-mart supertech 15-40 is not any good maybe I'll use that for the life of the truck as I own it.

I really don't want nor need the expense of a synthetic since I'am **** about keeping everything a pristeen as possible. I changed oil every 3,000 on my 99 and with the recommended oil change interval on the 05 at 7500 miles I was thinking about changing mine every 5,000. Like I said I'am **** and even when I used synthetic in the 99 I could not go any longer than 5,000 miles.

It's your truck, your money and your warranty. Therefore, you can use any oil you want, but to minimize future potential warranty problems I would advise that you ensure that whatever oil you choose meets the warranty requirements for your particular truck as shown in your owner's manual (i.e., API donut on the bottle showing either CI-4 or CI-4 Plus certification, as applicable).

I choose to run Delo 400 15W-40 with a Fleetguard Stratapore filter, but that's based on my investigation showing this to be a superior dino oil with a long track record in diesel applications. To me, quality oils and filters are just cheap insurance. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply, but look at my third sentence.

FWIW supertech 15-40 is CI-4/SL rated (latest and best) and I will have to double check to be sure but I think it even has the API donut which means it has meet and pass the institutes standards which all the name brands do to insure quality.

My take is name brands are alot of hype, of course hype sells unless it has been proven useless.

I'am not new to diesel threads, posts (over 2 thousand and 4 years before leaving another site), or owning diesels, I have researched alot on different oils in the past, was just wondering if someone has already done the leg work on supertech oil.

My understanding is, whoever (oil company) gives wally word the better price gets in their bottle. So it can be a toss up on what your getting beyond the standard SAE specs. my 2 cents

Last I heard it was Penzoil/Quacker State in the Super Tech Bottles.

they aren't talking about diesel lube, but

calims
"For all you guys out there that are looking to use some great oil at a great
price... I have a shocker for you: The oil that Wal-Mart sells under their house
name (Super-Tech) is very good quality oil. In many tests done over the last
year or so, the Super-Tech oil was superior to many name-brand oils. The oil is
supplied to Wal-Mart by Pennzoil/Quaker-State. It uses the same high-quality
group II/III base stocks as their name oil, but uses an off-the shelf additive
package."

I'm not saying it is good or bad. ANd I don't that this applies to the CI-4 spec stufff.

You are throwing away much oil money, so what is the big deal with saving a few cents on off brand oil. The oil does not even start to get dirty until 6000 or so. Its your truck, do what you want, but changing the oil at 3000 is simply throwing away money.

I agree with Haulin. I can't see any benefit in over servicing a vehicle. I see some people that say it's cheap insurance. It's not cheap and I don't see the insurance either.

Man you guys make me feel like an idiot. All I want is proof if the oil is speced according to label not a bunch of it's your truck your warrenty crap. Where's the proof that it is not any good in those statements. Have any of you negative guys seen or even heard of an oil related failure due to useing wal-mart brand labeled oil. I would think wal-mart would have alot to loose if they sold inferior products.
Like the old lady in the commercial use to say, "wheres the beef".

Sorry if I offended you, I have no information on the accuracy of the labeling. I just don't use off brand oil, never did. Its your truck, use what feels good to you. I do, Delo 400.

If its labeled for use in these engines then I bet a $1000 bucks its for real. With regular changes by the book probably run longer then the body of the truck will last with normal care. I used it in my 93 W250 for several years and then changed to Amsoil 15w40 and extended my change intervals.

Would you believe that SuperTech Universal just might be Rotella T with a slightly less additive package, but still rated CI-4.
