Visible smoke from blow by tube

Hello I am new to the forum as a member but have been reading for a while. I have researched past threads about excessive smoke from blow by or oil smells. But hopefully look for some more specific info for my situation

I have been smelling what I would describe as hot oil smell, not a burning oil smell, like if you took the oil fill cap off after running the motor for a while and smelled.

The smell came from the drivers side the side of the motor the blow tube sits on. The other day after running my truck for a while before I shut it off I crawled under the truck to look at the blow by tube and saw what I would consider visible smoke but not excessive. I have noticed (last couple of oil changes) a heavier build up of an oilier than normal coat of oil that covers that side of the moter, front of tranny etc.

My truck has always used a little oil but is now using about a quart every 1500 miles. Called cummins tech of there website and they told me that is still in spec's. No oil leaks not even from the heavier than normal coat from smoke coming out of the blow by tube.

I deliver RV's part time and my 2005 has 217,000 and am close to paying off, but absolutely horrified that my motor might be wearing out. I have taken care of it, oil changes etc.

Sorry for research paper length but trying to give detailed info hoping that it will be able to provide enough info for some helpful
insights, tips, info, or whatever.

Thanks in advanced

the smoke is more then likley ring flash. Who's oil? must be running non-syn oil. the blow by is coming from build up of crap on the rings, (maybe). The 04.5 and up trucks soot bad and if your using a pertrolem oil there was the start of your problem. You will get all kinds of people saying they have run xyz oil never had a problem, but you tow and it sounds like quite a bit for the 217k you have on your 05, towing makes heat and pertrolem oil sticks to hot parts and make carbon that will hurt ring seal. Now if your runing a syn oil 100% no blend then your over using it. you need to put a bypass filter kit on the truck like the FS2500 and go to a full syn oil problem (blow by) wont go away but it wont get worse, whos knows it might get cleaned up over time. Just thinking

Not sure on the cost for the FS-2500 I think they sell them here not sure , do a search. I run Red Line 15-40 Diesel and change it 5K, but any full syn for Diesel is better then a pertrolem oil, but at the time I dont have the FS-2500 by pass filter on there yet getting one soon, the soot levels are too high in the 04.5 and up. I will get back to you on a web site for the filter.

It sounds like its getting tired,or your losing a head gasket. Air filter maintenance goes a long way with these engines, you can change the oil every 3-5K,but if your running a re oil type air filter that lets more dirt in,the engine just isnt going to last as long as it should.I dont know how long you've been running the Bully Dog,but more power puts more wear on the engine,it may be a contributing factor to the engine getting tired earlier than a stocker should.Get an oil analysis at your next oil change and see what it looks like.I get one every few oil changes so you can find little problems before they become big$$$ problems.

I put my bullydog on around 50k and ran it 95% of time in lowest setting.

took out the bullydog at 140k and didn't run it for 5 months after and fuel break and put it back in around 190k.

The cold air filter, afe, whatever their called which is K&N on the filter anyways was installed at about 90k.

let's say the majority of my problem is not running a stock paper filter would and she is getting tired would it be worth it to return to stock to slow aging or is aging an exponential problem that at a certain point becomes a snow ball rolling down a mountain.

No hounddog no oil samples done with that filter, what are some testing companies that I could search on internet to find addresses?

As far as smoke or vapor it was in my opinion heavy enough to be considered light smoke, but it is a borderline description that could very from one set of eyes to another.

I really am grateful for the time to help me with responses, I'm obviously concerned because she is a big part of my income and right know with this economy big$$$ is bad for the home front if you know what I mean.
