Valve cover spring

I took off the valve cover to adjust the valves and noticed that there is no spring in the cover. My truck is a 03 should it have it. I have never had the valve cover off before and the time i have had it there has no engine work done to it except for usual maintenance. What is the spring for. Can it fall done passed the valve train in to the engine. Does it stick in the cover or will it fall out once you pull the cover. Is this spring used from 2003-2007?
I only got aware of it from this forum for adjusting valve.

Here is some pics of a 04.5 with it from that forum if that doesn't upload right.
Thank you

I just thought the spring was there to make it easier to remove the valve cover. But I'm no expert.

Just a friend bump for someone else to chime in!
