U Joints Changed - 13 Months Old
New front U joints changed out yesterday, only 13 months since last set in June '07. Truck (3500) is an '04.5 with 57,000 miles. Put 18,000 highway miles on that set, no off-road, only 10 miles on flat gravel. What's with this? The original set lasted 3 yrs, 29,000 miles.
The latest set now have grease fittings. Dealer says they are OEM. Originals and 2nd set did not have grease fittings. Does anyone know if Dodge is now replacing the U joints with units that can be greased? I checked the part numbers (Fr, L & R), same for each side, 5086665AC. This is the same number for the set changed in June '07.
thanks,
Roy

You should take the drive line to a drive line shop and have the shaft run out measured.
If the run out is too high, it will tear up the joints even though it may be balanced.
I had to replace my whole rear section because the factory shaft had .1" of runout in it, after shelling the factory joints at 37000 mi.
