Turbo-rear exhaust blades! ouch!!!!!!!!!!
Turbo-rear exhaust blades! ouch!!!!!!!!!!
So I tackled my pyro gauges install the same way I did on my previous truck with no problems. I wasnt so lucky this time I guess. A shaving or something must have fallen down and upon start up I heard the ticking noise coming from the turbo. I immediately shut down and tore the turbo off to find that the rear blades below the pyro were all chipped and chewed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What to do now? Can I just get replacement fins and from where?
How did you do it? Just want to know so I don't do the same thing. You can look at it as a way to justify an aftermarket turbo. I wouldn't recommend going to the dealer, it'll cost too much. Try talking to the local Cummins dealer/shop and see what they could do.
Garret turbo???? youu can probably just purchase a new hot wheel and install it yourself. Short of that, i'm sure there are reman cartridges available.
Is it just minor chipping of the edges of the hot wheel???... How bad are you calling"bad"?

So whats the ballpark price to replace the center cartridges and does it need to be sent out or can I do it myself? No way I am buying a whole new stock set up. Guess at this point it comes down to how much to fix this one vs. buying aftermarket one and which.
Drilled very slowly and carefully. Kept the drill bit heavily greased. Had a shop vac sucking right beside the bit. Same routine when tapping. Even cleaned the threads with a Q-tip inbetween each tapping and test fitting.
I think one of the issues is the new one uses an 1/8" NPT fitting. My old truck used a 1/4" NPT. With the bigger hole, I could reach in with a magnet and route around for chips. I don't recall my old one being directly above the turbo either. The way the new one is, there is nothing under the hole to catch the chips except the turbo.

Anyone have thier stock turbo laying around from an upgrade? I dont really have the need to do an upgrade at this point but I am definaltely not spending a bunch of money on a stock turbo.
Sorry to hear about your trouble....
I was so paranoid about something like this happening when I installed my pyro, I removed the exhaust manifold. Cost ~6hrs (my time) to R&R and ~$40 in gaskets, for the turbo and exhaust manifold.

Everyone I talk to is telling me that it can not be repaired and I must bite the bullet and replace it. I am leaning toward an aftermarket since I am spending the money anyhow. Any suggestions, I am not up on the turbo stuff as I had not planned on doing this upgrade for a good while yet. Plans for the truck will be a Smarty, intake, tranny work, possibly fuel delivery. I do not plan on going extreme just would like to end up around 500hp when complete.

The hot wheel is generally attached to the shaft and the compressor wheel is usually servicable, BUT not sure on these specific turbos. You can however just find a old take off and use that....sounds like your best bet. Might try calling some vendors on here that deal in turbos and see if they have any takeoffs laying around. Alot of them usually do.
Good luck.
