What the heck happened to my rear diff!! Pics

Is that groove above the spider gears supposed to be there?
I find it hard to believe that might metal could be rubbed off and never make a sound.

Did you find out what caused it? Mine has 327k miles. Never expected to have issues with the diff.

Me too. Did you find all the metal shavings in the bottom of the pumpkin or do you think it might have been machined during the manufacturing process for spin balancing?

I've had fairly regular oil changes. The oil on this last change was not bad I was told. I tend to think the previous shop didn't take the cover off to do the change. Or this happened in the last 30k or so miles.

Mine looked like that during my first service. There was little to no metal in the case. At first I panicked but after reflecting a while, I concluded it was just machine work during manufacture. With over 140K miles on it now with no problems, my guess must have been right.

Pretty sure that is normal. Mine looked like that since the first time I serviced the diff also.

every Torson/ tru-trac differential I`ve seen looks just like that. it is from the manufacturing procedure. not to worry.
