Transmission service
Transmission service
I have 30,000 miles on the truck and am going to service the trans for the second time. I am considering changing the fluid over to amsoil but do not have pump to circulate the fluid completley out. What suggestions do you have for this service? Will the amsoil even help if I drop the pan and change filter and just refill? Does anyone make a transmission pan with a drain plug for these trucks? Thanks in advance for the help.
I can't answer your questions about Amsoil, but I can tell you that tranny pans are available for the trucks. I am leaning toward buying a Mag-Hytec Tranny and rear Diff pan for my truck and changing out all of my fluids at 15,000, which is only a few hundred miles away. PML also makes a nice tranny pan and rear diff pan too. Either one of the two would serve you well and both offer a place to probe for a tranny temp gauge and each have a drain plug. You might do a search on this board to find more about the PML and Mag-Hytec products.
I too, am not sure what fluid I going to put back in when I change out the old.

remove or cut and splice return line to tranny from cooler, start truck. fluid will pour out, refill as it is coming out. if using quart bottles, i would pour at least four of then into a larger gallon container. shut truck off if u run slow on the refilling, or have a helper hand u opened bottles.u colud also loosen the vavle body with pan off to drain torque converter. the tranny filters are manufactured by spx filtrans and the garuntee that thier filters will last the life of the truck without being replaced.

My 93 Ford F150 had a torque converter plug. Unless my math is off, that was less than 3 decades ago.
I second the idea of unhooking the return line from the cooler and filling as you go, it definately helps to have an assistant to help fill it back up and to shut it down if you need to catch up. I have done that several times on various vehicles, as have friends of mine, with no ill effects. It is just like having it flushed without the $100 invoice.

Well not many in the last three decades had a torque convertor you could drain. Some shops about THREE DECADES plus ago actually use to drill a hole in them and use a pop rivit to seal it! Trying to flush one in the driveway and having a helper and fliud everywhere is fine if I lived in Zula land. But A flush machine does a MUCH nicer, safer job.It and air conditioning are about the neatest things since sliced bread.
flush
i agree with hounddog the flush machine sure makes my life a lot easier as a dc trans tech. i would use atf+4 and not the amsoil though . i have seen t/c shuddering issues with trucks after installing amsoil atf and i know amsoil says it is compatible so take it for what it is worth just my 02 cents. i would also change the filter again just my opinion ( cheap insurance considering the price of the truck) since the pan gasket is reusable.
