Transfer case issue

When i start out in 4wd it makes a banging and clunking sounds. it doesnt really engage and slips out of 4wd, i have the electronic one if that helps. But if you shift on fly at 20mph it goes in smooth and makes no noises unless you get into it a bit (over 2k rpm) 4wd is working at 20-30 mph i drove home in blizzard with out issues at those speeds. When i slowed down istarted getting the noises again. 2wd is fine no issues at all. Any thoughts??? Rebuild or replace or just fix it???

You might want to check the chain in the case.....very prone to loosening up and slapping the case....friend of mine had the same "banging" noise you described and that was the problem with his. You might also check the joints in the front driveshaft as well.

Front drive shaft was rebuilt. All joints checked. Truck doesnt make a peep on a lift. 4wd operates properly on lift. on the ground it binds and bangs.

Lets say it was a chain. 200 for a chain. Then i am guessing 5-6 hours labor?? taking case out and fixing. I have 151k on truck. So repair may cost 600 at a tranny shop. 1000 for a rebuilt one with a warranty and I can get it swap out for less than 200

Can the chain be tighten easily???

Once the chain stretches that's it. I know I found a chain searching for buddies case couple years back and it was around $150....I think. Don't know where I found it. It would be easier if you could remove the back of the case and tell for sure that the chain is in fact the problem.
