Tranny temp monitoring

Greetings,
I have a 2006 CTD Quad and recently purchased a 5th wheel trailer. Since I will be driving through the mountains in the summer, I figured it would be smart to monitor the tranny temp. I don't see a guage specific to this on my model (SLT Big Horn Edition). Is this something I need to have added as an aftermarket device? If so, any recommendations? I assume that the truck came stock with the oil cooler, since it came with the tow group installed. Any recommendations are welcomed.

Thanks.

You will have to buy an aftermarket guage to monitor the tranny temps..

there are a lot of opinions on this but I will give it a shot. You actually do not need a gauge for transmission temperature if you drive correctly and "listen" to how your vehicle responds. But for me, I really like to see the tremperature of the transmission and EGT. One problem to consider, ask your local dealership if they will have a problem with your gauges. Some dealerships "MAY" assume gauges=engine modifications. This may affect your warranty. I had to go to a dealership 30 miles away just for this reason. Here is a picture if my truck.

The EGT rarely goes above 1200* but use it for shutting down. I wait till EGT drops below 350* and when towing 2 minutes or so after 350*. Now transmission temperatures stay between 165-180* most of the time. In the city stop & go traffic with hills, temperatures got past 180* and I just did the O/D lock out, worked just fine. But backing the boat up the driveway really gets the temps to climb . A automatic is not very efficient in reverse. I really like my gauges for the above reasons. I have explained this to my dealership and they don't agree with me with the EGT but do not give me any problems. I even had a piston rod bearing go out on me last year, waranty was no problem (see my pictures if you want). I got my gauges from www.dieselmanor.com, really helpfull. For (2) gauges around $350 fir the kit. I got ISSPRO but the Dipro (sp) are really close to stock also.

In my opinion if towing, an EGT and tranny temperature gauges are a must. Especially if towing in the mountains. I cannot remember where I got it but I bought a line that replaced the feed line to the tranny cooler that was set up for the sender for the tranny gauge. Again, in my opinion that is the best spot to take a read, that is where the fluid is the hottest.

When towing our 5th wheel I have my Commander setup with the 4 screen setup. I am watching EGT, Trans Temp, Water Temp and Boost. I also set it to defuel if I hit 1350* EGT. You do need to keep a eye on the trans temp on hills and when it is hot outside.

Read the other thread on gauges. That being said, and my opinion about gauges being written in there....I have to say - Fox those gauges look great! That is some bling I could probably convince myself that I need. No idea why I have never seen them over the mirror like that, but that really looks good. Are they lighted at night? How is it having light coming from up there when looking in rear view?

Are they needed? No, not unless you are towing well beyond the truck's rating...but still....I could see those in my truck. Very nice

The Quadzilla Commander has everything you need for towing and you can get the best deal right here on this forum.

Commander

Alcor, Did you have to put any thing additional in for the fuel pressure part of gauge? I have outlook and put in a seperate tranny gauge but now I want fuel too. As for tranny temp, mine usually run 120-140F city and upwards of 200F when plowing. These trucks don't like a big airdam on the front. Can never get it to cool down much between plow sites.

Questions:

For the Quadzilla Commander, does it take data from the ECU for the boost and fuel pressure?

When I install gauges, I only want to tap for the EGT probe, post turbo. I don't want to tap into the intake manifold for boost pressure, or anywhere in the exhaust system pre-turbo.

foxborough, where did you install the egt probe on the manifold? The instructions that come's with the gauges (dieselmanor) show a different manifold.

No. Boost is read off the factory sensor by tapping into one wire, and fuel pressure is read with an add-on sending unit. That's one thing that makes the Commander so great. It doesn't read anything via the ECM, thus all readings are accurate on a modified vehicle.
