Too loud!!

Bought my first cummins a little over a year ago. Followed the advice of friends and family and put on some power parts which included 5 inch exhaust. The ad said "agressive tone but not overbearing". :o YEA whatever!! It actually is fine empty but 90% of the time its pulling 12,000 pounds. When accelerating especially up a grade it is nearly unbearable! Sounds like the tail pipe in under my seat!! Is there a brand of muffler that anyone is aware of that is a little (LOT) quieter but will still not too restrictive so as to boost my EGT's?

Nelson and Donaldson both have good sounding mufflers that will quite it down considerably. They are available at most heavy truck shops. Paid around $80 for my 51" Donaldson at our local Freightliner dealer.

thanks. I'll check that out. At that price it would be worth a try.

FWIW I had a lot of noise when I had my 5" TBE installed, too. It exited, as usual, to the right and behind the rear tires. I had the installer cut the exhaust pipe back and add a 45* elbow so it exits down and just behind the outside dual. It really cut down on the drone and we can have a normal conversation even when towing our 13k fifth wheel trailer. Hope this helps.

I second the donaldson 51". I have over 200K miles on mine and zero issues. Quiet and effective

UPDATE...read some other posts and went with the FTE resonator. Installed it tonight and took it for a test drive. So far so good. Sound overall is a little quieter and less drone. The real test will come next week when I take the 5ver out for a trip. I'll let you know how it goes and thank for the info guys.

Another option is a Nelson 86130m, which is 5" X 51" and probably doesn't have a baffle. I have a Nelson 86131m, which is 4" X 51" and it doesn't have a baffle. It eliminated my drone and is almost as quiet as stock.

Just got back from pulling the 5ver. Still not completely satisfied! Cut down on the drone but still pretty loud in the cab. gonna have to try another plan!

Might want to check your exhaust hangers, make sure the system is not rubbing against the body somewhere, also that it hangs and is not forced into a position as you will get a lot of extra noise.I assume you put the resonator off of the downpipe.Mine is totally quiet pulling on the flats, you do know when you hit a pull, my fiver is 15000 lbs.

Yep, 51" Donaldson muffler cured my drone while towing. I work @ a F/L in Alberta. Thats a good price on the muffler. Its quiet again, I did not notice any higher egt's.

Yea its on the down pipe and mine is also pretty good pulling on flats but get into it going up a grade and reach for the ear plugs! I will check to make sure its hanging free next time I have it up on the hoist. Dont think its rubbing anywhere but I can check that also. thanks

I have a short box so not sure I have room for the 51 inch. You think the shorter Donaldson would give me the same results?
