I would think you may have a injector issue. Never heard of a LP "knocking" in the process of dying. Check you oil level to see if your "making oil"
Did you get this resolved? (loss of power, strange sound)
If I lift off the throttle the sound certainly drops off, almost completely.
It's kinda strange why it's so loud only in those ranges, another way to describe the noise , it sounds like the noise you get when your speedometer cable was starting to go (If your old enough to remember
).

).Hey rjweiss, this is going back 8 years... but did you ever resolve this issue?
I've been having similar problems with my 05 Ram 3500 5.9l
When I pull my big Toy Hauler lately I've noticed a serious loss of power. The first sign of any problem started with this sound that would only happen when pulling hard up a big hill with the 5thwheel in tow.
The best way I could describe it was to compare it to the old speedometer cable... but higher frequency. So when I read your comment here, I said, I gotta contact this guy!
I've taken it to all my diesel friends and a few shops. Ruling things out, but still can't nail down the problem. Been at it for a month now.
The sound is getting worse.... I'm wondering if the fuel pump in tank isn't getting enough fuel to the injector high pressure pump which is causing it to make the sound I'm hearing, which only happens on a long steady uphill climb, usually around 70km/h (yes I'm Canadian)
Did you get this fixed?
Thanks for any help.
