Swapping gears-------Is it doable?

Has anyone swapped out gears------------3.73 for 4.10's-------- and what did it cost? Did the dealer have to do it to keep warranty or did you use a local shop. I am thinking of swapping my 3.73 to 4.10's and was wondering what to expect for cost.

It certainly is doable; but with 4x4's you've got two axles and double the cost. If you have the dealer do it, you might want to stop at Ft Knox first so you can pay for it. I've seen costs range anywhere from $500 - 1000 per axle (parts and labor) - and quite frankly (quite often?), they're never the same again. I wouldn't do it.

Maybe you could find a fellow nearby with 4.10's and do an axle for axle swap.

Why the change? Those 3.73's too tall or something for 315's? This question is usually asked by 4.10 owners that think their engine is spinning way too fast on the slab, and that 3.73's will result in lots better fuel mileage.

I looked in to it when I went with the 35's. Parts and labor, $1,000 per axle.

In the long run, really glad I didn't. BTW - running 3.55's here.

I don't think that there is much available for third gen's yet, but if you just want to swap one stock ratio for another, you should be able to scare up the parts. I would not let a dealer do this type of work on a bet. Ring and pinon sets are easy to screw up, I would take it to a 4 x 4 shop that does this type of work on a regular basis. If you have the patience, I would wait until there is another type of limited slip to do at the same time. I would go for an Auburn or similar.

Good luck.

The 3.73's are great when I am not towing---------I do tow a 30 TT and I dont like taking it out of O/D--------seems like the engine is screaming when I do so I figured with the 4.10's and 315's my final drive would be in the 3.90 range. I also am very hesitant about doing it-----------I mean I dont have problems now and I would hate to do it and have problems.

I hear you; I missed the part that you have an auto - with its higher OD ratio than the stick.

Still, given everything else and 2 axles, I'd live with it. When out of OD, just keep it locked up in direct; that would be the same situation I'd be in when in 5th.

If it helps, there are lots of guys around here hauling more weight than you or I would ever pull, and they do it with 3.55's.

. . . seems like the engine is screaming when I do so . . .
I prefer to think of it as "singing". As I understand it, as long as you stay under the redline, it'll run all day long - no worries.

I will assume that you don't want to install a fueling box which would solve the issues you are having?.?. I've seen several posts from guys putting an EZ box on and only running it on level 2 to keep the EGTs down but giving the truck enough extra power to keep it in OD even while towing. As others said, you will pay $1500-$2000 for a gear swap. Post a question to see if anyone wants to swap complete rears. Lots of people are unhappy with their 4:10s too.....

I'll keep mine.

I do have a box on----------its a TTPM--refaced edge and yes it does tow great but with the current setup I tow at 67 mph and that gives me a rpm of 1700. The truck does not hunt or search for gears and tranny temp stays at 180*. I did try and take it out of O/D and rpm's were 2400 at 65 mph and tranny temp was climbing-----got to 200 and I went back into O/D. I just figured with the 4.10's and the 315's my final drive would be in the 3.90 range and would be alot better all the way around.

Check out this thread over on TDR. I think this guy wants to swap the other way. Maybe you two could hook up . . .

Many jeepers have it done, any "reputable" 4x4 shop can do it(NO 4 wheel Parts wholesalers). I had mine done on my wrangler for 400 for the front and 150 for the rear(labor only)(I brought them the axle out of the jeep). I have never had a problem at all, Yes it is critical but it is an art. The gears do have a break-in period and are just as good as factory if done right. Find a gooood shop and ask them what their warranty is. Richmond and precision gears are very good R&P manufacturers. Try Randys ring and pinion for more learning material.

I understand what you mean by "it will never be the same" setting up gears is something I have no clue how to do, and don't want to learn on my $1500 AAM rear end. I have 3.73s and big tires... I spin 2000 RPM @ 75 MPH and would really love to be spinning 2200 RPM at that speed...

I'm considering just buying a junkyard 11.5" 4.10 LSD and swapping it in, and then having a shop do the front end... if the gears are not set up as precisely as from the factory it will not matter as much since 4X4 is not used 24/7 like the rear axle. Still not something I love the idea of doing...

HMMM.
