Suggestion on Low Diff Levels

Just a suggestion on 03s that are being bought with low diff fluid levels...give NHTSA a call and file a report with them. D-C is kind enough to give you the number in the back of the owner's manual.

Mine was 36 oz low in the rear and 14 oz low in the front. Thankfully I had only approx. 340 miles on it when it was suggested that I look at it by a guy in my 4x4 club. I called NHTSA that night. If they have enough reports, maybe D-C would actually start addressing it.

What I can't believe is that it should be a known problem to D-C, and they allowed me to drive off the lot with the low diff levels. Safety-wise, you really don't want crap to stop turning at high speeds. Just imagine if you had 13k worth of trailer.

Sounds like your front is alright. The rear, which in your case is the 11.5", should be 1/4" +/- 1/4" below the fill hole per the manual. That means right at the bottom of the fill hole is acceptable.

Per your manual, they recommend a GL-5 75W-90 synthetic. Either the Mopar stuff you get from the dealer or something like Mobil 1 would work just fine.

The mobil 1 75w-90 gear/diff oil is some good stuff :)

Re:Suggestion on Low Diff Levels

I took everyones advice when I received my new 2500 and checked the differentials. Couldn't even feel lube with my pinky finger so I took it to the dealer and I watched the mechanic pump fluid out of a barrel into the front and rear. Don't know exactly how much he put in, but he pumped that handle quite a few times. Had them check the transmission and it checked out ok. What a joke. I asked the service manager if they check during the PDI. He said they are supposed to, but haven't heard of anyone having any problems or finding theirs low. I directed him to this web site, he needs a little education!

It would be of interest to know if Bow Tie and Big G dealers are having the same Low Differential Lube Problems. Since AAM manufactures for those two and Dodge.

I would bet this means they put the wrong fluid in. I bet they don't even have the new stuff in a barrel yet. It should be synthetic and is new for the new AAM axles. The parts guy at my dealer wanted to give me the same old axle fluid used in the Dana's and thought they were all the same.
