Suddenly, No TC Lockup, No Overdrive
Suddenly, No TC Lockup, No Overdrive
Yesterday, 9,600 miles into a 9,800 mile Alaska adventure and at 62 MPH on level ground the truck jumps out of OD and into 3rd gear and won't lock the TC either by itself or with my Mystery Switch. So, its 45 MPH max with the TC now cooking the oil. Selecting D gives third gear, 2 gives second gear, and 1 gives second as well (although I could swear it initially gave me first gear).
I have a PO973 code that indicates a "Shift Solenoid shorted to ground". Funny thing is, within a few hundred miles of leaving home in mid-June, the OD would intermittently not engage, but the TC locked fine. Turning the engine off and on, and fiddling with the transmission selector seemed to cure it. At least for some 9,000 miles of flawless operation.
One shop has said, rebuild or replace, another said check the wiring. The fluid still looks new, but I haven't pulled the pan to look for metal.
Ideas? We made it home so I have options.

I've got +12v at both voltage inputs to the Transmission Control Relay and no shorted connections showing below the relay. I also swapped the relay for a known good one. The transmission wiring harness looks OK at the transmission and there are no TCR-related codes, just the PO973 related to the Shift Solenoid.
I CAN'T FIGURE OUT how to get the 8-pin connector loose from the transmission to test voltage to the Shift Solenoid at Pin 8 on the connector. Absent that, I guess its pull the pan and see if the inside harness has an issue.
I had a local shop change the transmission fluid and adjust the bands before we left for Alaska. I wonder if they damaged something harness-related inside the trans? As I said, soon after the work, OD intermittently didn't engage, then good for another 9000+ miles. Then, well, worse.
As an aside, AAA paid the $2,500 tow bill for a a big-boy wrecker to get us home over a 7,000 ft Interstate Highway pass that I could not climb safely without TC lockup. AAA Premier Membership paid off. Fortunately we were 21 miles short of the 200 mile Premier Towing limit on our 9,600 mile journey "Into The Wild", and from which, WE RETURNED, albeit on the Hook of Shame. Sigh.

Thanks for letting us know the details and its fixed. Perhaps that shop messed that part up doing their band adjust... Sometimes, the preventive maintenance causes more problems than it solves depending on who does the work.

Yes, he did sort it out and he did post the solution....

Oh, look....
What are those links pointing to in your reply?
I didn't notice them at first. Only found them with the quote...
You some kind of spambot?

Westcoaster, good answer.
Haily, your profile tells us that you live in France and are a female, but no more. Would you be so kind as to tell us exactly where in France you live and also tell us exactly what your interest is in Dodge trucks. Do you now or have you ever owned a Dodge truck? Please fill us in on what Dodge truck you own, year, model any all modifications etc. Correct me if I am wrong, but Dodge trucks are not common in France, so why the interest?
