Stock Truck - Black Smoke?
Stock Truck - Black Smoke?
So this is my second question in about 2 minutes.
I have a mostly stock truck (I was told). The only thing thats not stock is the exhaust. When I first got this truck about a month ago, it had a straight pipe. Now I have a 86108M Nelson (the one with the baffles) and no cat. Oh, I also have a tripple disc TQ, but don't think that applies here.
So whats happening is when I really stand on it, I get a moderate amount of black smoke out the pipe. Even when I just take off moderately fast (say up to 2100 or so) I still get some smoke at take off.
So my question is...is this normal? I was under the impression that mostly stock trucks like mine don't smoke...its only when you start overfueling from a chip, etc that they start to do that. Does the change in backpressure w\ the exhaust on a factory program cause an overfuel at lower RPM before the turbo can spool up, and thats what causes it, or could I possibly have a program on the chip without knowing it?
Any advice would be apprecaited! Thanks!

As long as its just a puff and clears up once the turbo spools up its normal. Should smoke more if you take it easy for a while and step on it then youll get a nice black cloud. It still should clear up within a couple of seconds. The 5.9's will smoke stock, the 6.7's wont. I have no engine mods other than an intake and mine smokes pretty good when i get after it, i like it though, even more so this time of year with all the convertables.
Remember its a diesel without a cat or muffler your gonna see a little more black smoke. The only time that you need to worry about black smoke is if your leaving a trail at cruising speeds or rolling out for an extended period of time.
And lastly always use black smoke to your advantage, especially in traffic against people who are clueless.

lol....when the truck still had a straight pipe, i had people rolling up their windows all the time.
So ok, sorry to keep beating this into the ground...i guess i am just really paranoid that something is going to go wrong.
So driving into work this morning, i was watching the mirror more than the road.
But even on moderate takeoffs it was smoking just a little. Additionally, if i was up to speed (i tried at 55, 65, and 75), and i just gave it a little goose, i'd see a black puff then too. so is all that still ok???
Then, just for the sake of arguement....if i actually did have a problem, what would i be looking at? injectors? I question wether or not i have an injector issue anyway, as i have a noticable vibration at idle. More than i was expecting for this truck, thats for sure.

Mine is stock too.
When I cruise around town for a few days casually and then get on the highway and gun it the black smoke rolls out like a freight train.
I'll usually try and save it for an unexpected driver that rides my ***.

Mines been doing the exact same thing. I wondered if it was a injector thing but it seems like I only notice it on brighter days not overcast or cloudy. But its identical, whenever I just hit the pedal a bit it'll give a little black haze out of the exhuast but it'll clear up in sec.
I think it has to do with all the city and emtpy driving I do, I wanna find a big trailer and tow it around for a day to bring up the temps and clean it out.
