Stinky Exhaust???

Everyone that rides with me in my truck notices the smell of my exhaust and comments about it. It really doesn't bother me much as it's always had that smell to me. However, I will admit my truck doesn't smell like the other diesels around. The exhaust has what I'd call a mid-rotten egg smell. It doesn't have the good diesel smell that most have. It smells like this cold or hot, and I only really ever smell it when idling standing out side of it (loading up) and/or if the AC's on outside air and again I'm idling at a light or something.

I don't burn anything too crazy (yet). Just #2 and Super Tech 2-cycle oil. I also fill up/top off with bio-diesel if I'm traveling through Houston or Austin (as those are the only city's close to me that sell B100). The Bio doesn't really change the smell though, nor does Power Kleen service.

Any ideas??? Maybe my cat is bad??

noticed mine had a smell to it when i ran 2 cycle thru it and only then. quit putting 2 cycle in it and see if it stops

That's the normal Cat smell. Gotta love the Cat smell in the morning, Makes me feel like victory!!!!

yea but it only does it with 2 cycle because thats the only time i smell it

Spooler 10-28-2009 11:39 PM

I smell it all the time with mine and i only use diesel, not additives.

If you remove the cat the smell will be nice diesel,as it should be.
My 06 also stunk, not now though

do you run rotella oil? cuz that made mine smell bad

FunFinder5 10-29-2009 08:24 AM

I do run Rotella but it's a different smell than what the Rotella does, plus the Rotella smell goes away after 500 miles of an oil change.

I'll try to stop using the 2-cycle and see if that changes anything...I'm currently slightly above a quarter of a tank, so I'll let it get to almost empty before filling up and I wont use the 2-cycle.

I will say though that I've at times ran 1-2 tanks through of Bio-diesel and when I put Bio-Diesel in I don't add any 2-cycle as the Bio lubricates better (I can hear the difference). Even when running the Bio w/no 2-cycle I still get the smell.

I took my cat off for this reason, I can't stand the cat smell. I love the smell of a catless exhaust on a cool humid morning.

i just noticed my buddy's truck stinks this morning. he's got an 06 with stock exhaust. my truck is the same year with the cat removed and mine smells like a diesel should. i realized tho that i could be in trouble if i moved somewhere where my truck is required to pass an emissions test. out here on the west slope there is no test, but in denver it is required. should i start looking for a stock cat in case things change? i bought my truck used and it didn't have one.

My truck used to have that raw propane smell out of the tailpipe till I changed the exhaust and deleted the cat.
