Starting time ? 2nd gen. vs. 3rd

Just curious, no problems,,,,,

but why does the 2nd gen. VP engine start faster than the 3rd gen. CR??

On my old 2nd gen, you couldn't hardly get off the key fast enough and it was running, the newer '07 I have now has to turn over a couple of rev's to start, still plenty fast enough but seems to be about a second slower.

Dumb azz quetion, huh, need something to do with my time.

Takes a bit to get to 4500 psi (on a 3rd gen 5.9) to start for the common rail system i would think

As well as more sensors to get "timed".. the ECM can't fire an injector, until it knows which one to fire. Where on a VP44 truck the injection pump is hard timed, and always knows which one is next.

But they start pretty quick, if its slow to start it may need new software.. The Smarty Jr your thinking about would fix that.

i had the occasional long crank to start. took it in under warranty and of coarse they couldnt replicate. put my JR. on and hasnt happened since.

it still takes more cranks than a vp or 12 valve truck though

my 12V will fire instantly just bumping the key. My CR takes a few cranks.. I think by this time next year, I will have the 12V in the 03'...

Yeah the original SW from Dodge had long cranks!

With a common rail you will never get the same super fast starts as you will with a "pop-off" style injector.

Good post! I've always wondered this myself. My old 1st Gen starts on the first roll - the 06 takes 4-5 rolls. Thanks!
