Exclamation South Bend Clutch DD Grinding on engagement

Well had the tranny rebuilt and found pilot bearring and throw out bearing were bad as well. Got about 30 miles after it was all put back together and now when egaging the clutch to it grinds and lunges forward until fully engaged. Anyone have any idea if the clutch has now broke or if it was put back together wrong. It has about 70k of city driving on it and 3k towing the 5th wheel. It is a SBC DD 3600 with the sprung hub. Most power it has seen is about 400 hp and 800 ft/lbs. Never sled pulled and never ridden. Also double clutched as every shift if that helps.

Sounds like your clutch disks are not "floating" on the input shaft spline. What this means is that when you depress the pedal the disks literally center between the pressure plate contact point and the flywheel. This allows the friction in the gearbox oil to stop the gears and allow you to place it in gear. When the clutch is re-installed whoever does it should run the disk up and down the spline lots of times to ensure this float happens. I also lube the spline with a small bit of graphite.

Thanks for the info. In this case the front disk (that is closest to the fly wheel) was on backwards. Turned it around and good to go now.
