Runs more effeciently than a PS.

 

I have found that skip shifting will help decrease the warmup time. Makes the engine work a little harder.

I couldn't agree more, makes a huge difference. Plug it into a timer and set it to come on three hours before you leave for work, and get a winter front, Dodge makes the best looking one. Lists for $118.00 but can be had for low to mid 90s. LCH

 

I work about 8 miles from home, mostly highway. I plug mine in and it barely makes full temp by the time I get to work. Even in the summer time it takes a while. Just too good of a cooling system and oiling system. I am sure it doesn't help running synthetic oil too.

which year psd? the 7.3's from 99-03 had a butterfly valve in the exhaust [turbine outlet elbow] that actuated closed to load the engine [like having an exhaust brake on] to help with warm up...?

 

No exhaust backpressure valve on the Cummins.

 

You could buy an exhaust brake. It'll warm up in less than half the time. Or by the Espar coolant pre-heater.

 

It sems to take about 10 miles to get mine up to temp, which doesn't seem out of line for a 1000 lb or so engine.

 

bigbblue just said an exhaust brake aids warmup time. I had not heard that before, Zatso? good to know!

 

my pacbrake will come on either when I take my foot off of the go pedal with the truck still rolling(decel) and when the water temp is below 170*. definately aids in warmup. that is the design of the pac, dont know about the others.

 

Anyone have the part number for the Dogde winter front? I mentioned it to my local deal one day this past summer and he looked like a deer in headlights and couldn't even find it on the computer. At least I know they exist, i've seen photos somewhere on here. Needless to say I don't deal with that dealer too often.

Try to keep your RPM up a little higher. Mine actually warms up 2-3 times faster than the 95 if I keep the RPM close to 2000RPM. If I am coasting in traffic the truck seems to warm up tommorrow instead of a few minutes. Give it a try.
