Some authoritative info on the G56 transmission...

G 56 tranny
Have you had any problems with torque chatter in4th and 5th gears and also heating issues inthe same gears.
Good info WACTD.
I know that the difference in the ratio of 6th isn't that significant, but to me the NV's 6th gear is too low as it is, and the G just makes it worse. If you were going to tow heavy all the time, or drive on 55 mph highways it would probably be fine, but if you have occasion to try to keep up with traffic in a 75 zone for an extended period of time the engine is really wound up.
Also, I found it interesting that a company that deleted rear wheel liners, deleted passenger door key hole, and stopped painting radiators in an apparent effort to save a few bucks would turn around and put in the more expensive DMF with the G?
Anyhow, I don't have anything against the G, or alloy case transmissions, I just suspect that the decision was made to not spend the extra money to have a version of the G built with ratios more suited for our application...

No, the only things I don't like about how my nv performs is that occasionally it can be tough to put into gear after idling in neutral (the clutch does not seem to be dragging), and that it has started to get bumpy when shifting into 3rd...

Funny, no one had mentioned the only concern I had about going to the G-56, and that was the DMF.
If they couldn't last behind an anemic 6.5L Chevy (Detroit), how will they do with the stouter Cummins line?

Good thread WACTD !
I appreciate the passion you have for our trucks and the time you put into research.
I've watched the G56 vs NV5600 threads on other forums and it gets heated... sometimes ugly... a lot of loyal NV5600 fans out there still.
I've had both. Had an 02 HO with the NV5600 and it was a good tranny. Approx 2000 RPM @ 70 MPH. I do miss that. This past summer travelling from Washington to Arizona I saw 2400 RPM @ 75 - 80 MPH. That's the only downside. I had a diesel instructor tell me when I was younger that an engine lives best at 3/4 throttle. When I thought about that I felt better until I realized who was paying for the fuel
The G56 proves welcome when towing our 5th wheel, the gearing plus additional power of the 06 is a huge improvement.
I've had both and enjoyed both (the NV5600 gave me no problems at all), the shifting is noticably smoother with the G56.
My 2 cents worth...

I'd probably like a G56.I think the 1st and reverse in the NV5600 is way to high.Hard to greep a big trailer areas with out on and off the clutch.I'd like a true granny gear and a very low reverse. As far as driving at 75 plus mph I very seldom do in any thing any more other then the once in a while burst.I'm content at 70 or so max in my truck or car.The ones driving at high speeds seem to get caught up in it and I find it nerve racking. Its no wonder accidents are bad as they are.I drove to Geenville S.C.and back yesterday pulling a trailer people are honking at 75 plus.No turn signals for lane changes, weaving in and out of traffic.Everyone wants to be in front.Just plain dangerous. Not for me.Plus their fuel mileage has to be in the crapper.

my old boss had an o5 with the nv in it and we all hate the same thing about it ...the position of reverse. this stems from the rest of the fleet was international with 6 sp's in them but reverse is to the left and up like the g56
we are talking 6 full time drivers and we all went for a boot in it taking turns driving it and all 6 of us zinged the reverse gear trying to put it in 5th. more so out of habit because to hit 5th on the international tranny you just push it all the way to the right and up without thinking about it.
im glad to see tho that the g56 is actualy built for a truck above the 3500
I dont feel so bad pulling in 6th now

I drove some '05s with the G56 and settled on a new '05 with the NV5600 mainly because I was AFRAID of being a first-year guinea pig BUT as has been said, so far there doesn't seem to be a problem. My buddy has an '06 with the G56 and it shifts WAY better than a stock NV. But with the short shifter I like the NV better SO I guess I can still crow about the lower rpm in 6th and feel good knowing that when I get ready for a new truck there will be a worthy successor to the NV. Heck, it's still a CTD, right?

Actually, with the introduction of two choices of 6 speed autos that both have double overdrive, if they prove to be reliable I'm thinking my next truck might, could, possibly be my first automatic...

Yeah. If I do decide to get a new truck sometime soon the aisin might tip the scales toward doing a flatbed on a cab and chassis.
Should be neat to see what the 5500 turns out to be, too. If the G56 got paired to a 2 speed rear end, that might be pretty alright...
