Smarty Wrecked my Clutch
Smarty Wrecked my Clutch
Well I was returning from up north pulling my trailer with a JD Gator on board - so about 4000# all up. Passes a semi and put the foot to the floor in 6th and suddenly - I have an automatic. So its done at 88000kms or 55k miles. Looking at the SB CON-OFE. Good for 450hp / 900TQ. Any Western Canadians found a decent shop that sells and installs? What about Northern Diesel Performace in Edmonton - anyone used them?
No electronics to the clutch, just you left foot . . I'm about 10K more mileage than you, my stock clutch is just fine, and I have quite a few power mods plus I have the Smarty Jr set on #3 all the time, even when towing . .

Don't know - I am really easy on the clutch. Take off idling then apply throttle towing or empty. Never slip it but there she goes. Jr is set for SW2 thats it. No playing with Tq or timing.
The stock Dual Mass Flywheel and clutch can't take mods. PERIOD!!!! I found that out. The Con OFE I had didn't last, either... The installing shop screwed the pooch on the installation. I am in the process of installing a Valair dual-disc clutch now and am quite satisfied with the quality of the unit. The SB was totally destroyed when I removed it and somehow the pilot bearing had backed out of the flywheel... it fell out into my hand when the trans was backing out. The outer race was filthy indicating that it had not been in the recess of the flywheel for some time. The Valair pilot is staked into place.

Gadget - your pics looked simply like the clutch was installed incorrectly. The reason I state this is there was wear on the clutch plate springs that normally should not touch anything. I don't know if you can do it but was the plate installed backwards as that is the possible only way to make those springs rub. Most vehicles though, the clutch simply will not function with the plate installed backwards
Piers and Harry reopened as Peak Diesel Performance in Langley BC... although Piers has since sold out and is semi-retired after a short stint at BD.
Just providing some illumination and nothing more.
