Six speed vs HD Six speed

I was snooping around on the "build truck" function on Dodge's website....in the drivetrain section there is an option to choose a 6 speed manual or a "heavy duty" six speed manual....anyone know what the difference between these is and which one is better/stronger?

Thanks!

There is only one available with the cummins. HD 6spd. It will be the new one too, if you order.

Thanks for the reply.

I was a little confused because the site automatically selected a 6 speed manual (included in vehicle price) when I picked the Cummins engine, but further down in the window it allows me to select a Heavy Duty version of the manual tranny (400.00 extra).

G56

The rest of this model year the 6 speed transmission will not be the 5600 but will be a G56 model. It is a Mercedes transmission that will be used from the half production on. Don't know anything about it but I am sure they are going to save money on it or they would not be using it.

Your right pitbull, theres two listed, and you got a choise for the Cummins. One is standard , and one is listed H-D and cost $400.00 extra!!![laugh] ;)

Why do they switch the trannys form manual to auto when u select the plow package?

There is no plow option with a 6-speed. The fair weather engineers can't figure out how to plow and step on a clutch at the same time.

lol, i dont like plowing with autos, i think im gonna fry em! I know mine will hold up, but my buddies truck?[eyecrazy] I get scared..... But my pops gasser Ferd has a good trany in it. I dont think the ZF is that bad.

They also added 6 speeds for the gas Rams and Dakota's so maybe that's why there were two listed in case you wanted the Hemi.

I saw an 04 3500 on a local lot about a year ago. The base engine for the 1 tons were the HO. Since MA was a non-HO state, there was a $600 credit because it had the SO and since the tranny was an auto, it was $695 instead of $1095, crediting the $400 for not having the mandatory 6 speed. The 50 state 600 has eliminated this confusion for those of us living in the tree hugger states. [yuk]

Pitbull:

I picked up a 2005 brochure today and it has 3 transmissions listed for the Cummins.

6-speed HD manual
6-speed manual (late availability)
4-speed automatic

Does this mean the HD is the NV5600 and is available all year?

The new 6 speed manual (G56) replaces the HD (NV5600) for the 2005.5 models. If you want one it's going to have to be one that was built before the end of 2004.

A dealer near me had a 6 speed show up the second week of December. It was built in August so they aren't exactly on the fast track to New England, or probably Ontario. :( But the good news is they could still be showing up for a couple of months if you prefer the 5600. It's just too late to order one exactly the way you like.
