Should I get the reflash?

My engine was built in March of 04 so I don't know if it is eligible for the mileage reflash or not. I am averaging around 18 MPG doing mixed driving. This weekend on one leg of my 650 mile trip on Interstate I averaged 19.7 MPG driving 70, computer reading which has been within a tenth latey. On the way back I took the state highways through all the little towns, speeds up to 70, and averaged 19.2 hand calculated.

I am getting good mileage now so would the reflash make it better or possibly screw things up? Is it true that once they do a reflash it can't be undone? Should I just leave well enough alone and be happy with what I have?

The truck is about 10 months old and I now have about 46K miles on it.

Here is the info that should help you decide:

The reflash did help with making my computer more accurate and increased my actual mpg.

You are getting good mileage. I had the flash done and am getting the same mileage as before the flash. 14.5 mpg mixed city/freeway driving. Leave it alone in my opinion.

I have a 3/04 build (engine) and had the flash done. I was getting 13-14 in town. The flash raised that by about 2mpg and it eliminated the pinging sound.

That said, if I were getting the kind of mileage you are, I wouldn't touch it.

I bet you already have the reflash from the factory with the March build date, but you might want to check as i believe the "reflash" cal came out in early March of last year. I know a lot of engines down in Mexico were reflashed a few weeks before that.

I would check to see if your engine qualifies first (based on engine serial number). I have lots of experience with calibrating these motors, so I wouldn't be afraid, but I can certainly understand NJMurvin's perspective.

and to answer your question, you are right , once you get it flashed, you can't go back. But then again, its not what you know, its who you know.

I had the TSB done about 10k miles ago. It did not change my low mpg at all. I would love to get the mileage you get. Mine is still 13.5-14 city 16-17 highway.

I would NOT do it if I was getting your mileage.

Are there any negatives to getting the re-flash? It can't hurt right?

BTW, should the dealer do the reflash at no charge if I ask them to? My truck is going in early Sat. morning to have a keyless entry installed. I'm strongly considering getting them to reflash it while its there. I'm only getting 14-15mpg with mixed driving conditions.

I just bought an '04 quad cab/2WD/auto/dually/3.73 that was built in June of '04. Highway cruise (60-70mph) averaged 16-17 mpg. The computer showed about .6 less than actual figuring between topping the fuel. Drove from Ohio to FL so I had a few fill-ups.

It had 5,425 miles when I started, but I expected at least a little more. But from what I've read, it should improve as it breaks-in. Then I'll add synthetics. But I do plan to get the TSB flash and the dealer said that it will be at no charge.

Your mileage and options will affect fuel economy.

I dont think it can hurt anything. I have seen some that believe they lost some power after the TSB. I didnt really see or feel any change except for the overhead mpg calculations. They went from being lower than hand calculated to being higher than hand calculated.
