Rotella=smell ????
Rotella=smell ????
Ok, so I did my second oil change on the new girl this past weekend, and I've read on this site that guys have experienced an odor from using Rotella. I have a few questions.....
1- Why did it take to the second oil change using the same product before the oil started to smell? The smell was aparent right at start-up on the second change, no odor what-so-ever after the first service.
2- What did it smell like for everyone else? Mine smells literally like an oil refinery.
3- Where does the odor come from on these motors, a vent or breather for the crankcase? I used Rotella 15-40 in my 97 F350 for the 11 yrs that I owned it, no problems and never any odor....what gives?
Thank you for answering my dumb questions.

Rotella CI+4 odor is zddp, the hi-pressure lubricity stuff of STP additive - it's been removed to make CJ-4 meet current ULSD emissions standards because the thio is sulphur.
They may be using calcium sulphonate, another hi-pressure additive, to replace it.
