Rear diff gasket or RTV?

Going to change the oil in the front and rear axle today. Called around th the local parts stors for a diff cover gasket.... There isn't one. crawling under the truck it would appear lthat there is one there after the dealership changed the oil last.

So, should I go out and get a gasket for the diff cover or simply goop it up with the RTV silicone form a gasket?

RE-USE it.....

Use RTV.(with no gasket) done alot at the shop, all good. Would rec. stuff called " THE RIGHT STUFF" I think its maid by Permatex a little expensive but works good.

I just changed mine, and if you do not tear up the stock rubber gaskets you can use them again. Torque specs are 24ft lbs. on drain plugs, and 30ft lbs. on the cover bolts. Hope this helps..... Justin.....

Tricks to successful RTV use.
Clean old RTV throughly.
Use modest amount where it actually will seal and DON'T allow in bolt holes.
Don't allow oil to leak across fresh RTV before install cover. Generally does not seal if oil already there.
Allow curing time. Spray of water will hurry curing process.

I have changed the diff oil front/rear twice on my truck and I am still using the stock gaskets. They are made to be reused. I would not use RTV unless there is no other choice. The stock gaskets are like having an o-ring on the plastic gasket.

90k on the truck and will probably change the diff oil again after passing 100k. I am hoping to use the gasket agin. I will most likely purchase both front and rear gaskets just in case they need to be replaced.

The gaskets used on the diffs and tranny are the same and should be reused. Dodge made a good choice in this design.

Thanks guy's, It's kind of odd having reusable gaskets....

Yeah, the reuseable gaskets are a 3rd gen thing.

I'd have to say, it is a nice touch.
