rear diff on 3500

Just changed the oil in the rear differential on my 03 (15,000 miles) and got a surprise. I had expected to need to clean the silicone rubber and was prepared to use the mopar silicone that seals in oil on the back plate. The new axel uses a gasket! I was miles from any dealer and had to be careful and reused the old gasket. So far no leaks.

I used Penzoil GL-5 75w-90 synthetic as a replacement oil. Anyone have any comments on this oil. It was all I could find in this area of Arkansas.

It is reusable. It is metal with a rubber bead on it. No leaks after changing my oil. What hurt most was the price of the oil.

My dealer took about an hour to find the mopar part number and priced at $16 a qt. They didn't have the oil in stock. The Penzoil was under $7 at local discount store. Some of the parts stores had prices a little higher on other brands but none had 4 qt.

The gasket was metal, rubber covered with two beads. It did not stick and came loose under its own weight. This morning there is no leaks.

The manual does not list the oil capacity but for those interested it is 7.85 pints.

Since when did they ever use silicone to seal the cover on, from the factory any ways, always been gaskets that I know of.

;DMy truck I have changed it every 12000 miles, I do alot of pulling of Campers, so I keep it changed often.
From brand new it came with no gasket, It had the Mopar Grey silicone.
If it was supposed to have a gasket, I think they must have forgotten.
I run 80-90 year around, I have thought about using the synthetic gear lube, but it is pricey, and I dont know how well it will hold up under the pressure of pulling heavy loads.

My 97 used RTV silicone as a sealer. The new one uses a metal gasket with a rubber bead and is reusable.

Casey
