Rattle noise from right front?

I've had an intermittant rattle/vibration that sounds like it's coming from the right front tire area, or possibly from the driver's foot area near the parking brake. I haven't been able to track down the source. It sounds kind of like something loose vibrating or rubbing on sheetmetal but hard to describe. Only happens on rough pavement.

Since I have to take my truck in to the dealer anyway, I thought I might have them try and figure it out. The concern is the service rep told me they rarely see diesels in their shop so that scares me. If it's a common, simple thing, I would rather see if I can fix it myself.

Anyone have an idea on what it might be?

Thanks!
Scot

If you do a search, there are a number of causes. My 04.5 has the same thing. Trying to track it down. Anything from sway bar end links to ball joints to loose shocks.

Mine does the same thing on the rough road to my house and after hooking my trailer up and bumping it with the tractor to rattle the truck we were able to pinpoint it to the bar that locks the hood in place. My noise would only happen though if I was coming to a stop or making a turn on very rough pavement.

Thanks, guys. I did do a little searching and reading. The noise I'm hearing sounds metallic, but seems "lighter" than a suspension component. Of course, I might be totally wrong though. Hard to track down because I only hear it driving on a rough road.

Mine made the same noise and ended up being the bushing that goes from the top control arm needed to be greased. Greased up the Zerk fitting and the noise went away.

mine does that while backing out of my driveway... the other day, I was standing there while my wife borrowed my truck and it turns out to be the dust shield vibrating...

I just did a fix on the 05.

Inner fender was loose, most of the "bolts" holding it, had busted out of the liner, leaving it free to frolic around in there. The rattle was the liner hitting the outer fender, and the guide on the front bumper.

so I doubt this is your problem but on my truck the plastic shroud arround the steering colum rattles. The noise stops if I place my hand on the plastic.

I get an audible "POP" in my 04 when turning right, at speed and/or hitting a bump with the drivers front wheel.

I had a similar problem. In my case it was the shock absorber. The upper shock nut was loose. I tighten it up and the issue was fixed. Simple fix for an annoying problem.
