Rail mount fam spin on filters on it now that have never seen uel pre-filter question

I have a 2004 2X4 and have used a frame rail mounted fuel pump since less than 10k miles. It was a long time ago that I did this mod so I cannot recall the details other than I used a Mopar harness and a relay triggered by the signal for the stock lift pump that was on the side of the fuel filter housing. At 130k miles everything is fine except the fuel pump is getting tired. I am going to install a Holley Blue (please no opinions on the pump selection-thanks) and am wondering if it would be wise to put to use a dual filter base adapter I have laying around. It uses a 3/4" NPT filter and I happen to have 2 Fram spin on filters that have never seen any liquid through them on this adapter currently.
Can I get some input on using this adapter for a pre-filter going to Holley? Would an oil filter(s) be too much or too little filtration (microns?).
Thanks
Howard

the micron ratings on an oil filter are not low enough for fuel aplications, and no water stripping ability, the base is ok to use if u can find 3/4 fuel filters to fit it. a dual base is great when the first filter is a water seperator and the second one is a low micron rated seconday

I would agree with that. I would also add that it depends on the filter base. If it's the standard cast alum that you see in a lot of parts catalogs, I would pass. They are well known for cracking and leaking. They are not durable enough for reliable long term use. If that's what you have, I'd sell it on e-bay.

There are some really good billit alum bases available from companies like Canton. They are expensive - but good parts always are.

I used to drive 2001 Dakota with a 5.9 gas engine. I used a Canotn base, adapter, and -12 AN lines to mount a single large oil filter on the frame rail. Made oil changes a LOT easier.

You're generally better off with one single large oil filter than two medium sized filters. Dual filters look cool and make people feel better, but tend to cause a large pressure drop.

The filters probably are OK before the pump for protection of the pump but will not protect the CP3 and injectors. I would just add a 20 mic inline fuel filter to protect the pump.

Thanks for the great posts/advice. I will take purchasing a higher end base adapter into consideration. I did a fair amount of web searching but have not been able to find a spin on type fuel filter for this dual adapter base. It uses a 3/4-16 NPT thread for the filter center and will accept a filter with a gasket OD in the range of 2-2 3/4". Currently there are 2 Fram PH8A filters on it but I looked at Wix, Donaldson & Napa with no success. If anyone knows of a good source for spin on fuel filters I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Howard

ppsi,

The cross for the PH8A is the Donaldson Endurance Synteq pt# P169071. This however, is an oil filter as well.

i think i can help. first make sure the filters are in series, some are in parallel and some like the amsoil have special things in the base. nearly all 3/4 bases use 16 threads per inch for the w/s filter use luberfiner LFF9594 the problem with the 2 micron filter is i do not know of one in a 3/4-16 i take a easy out and remove the 3/4-16 and make an adapter to 1-14 on my lathe. all of the bases seem to use 3/4 -16 in the base no matter the thread pitch on the filter. i would suggest you convert both to 1-14 and use wix 33406 followed by 33674
the 2ond pix is a amsoil base that was gutted and changed to series and the 1-14 adapters installed

I think I will modify the base I have the way you suggest.
It can be installed for a series or parallel application so obviously I've got it set up for series.
Do you still use the fuel filter in the canister? It would seem to me that with all this fuel conditioning that the stock filter could be eliminated???
Thanks
Howard

Keep the filter in the canister. It will act as a backup and should not reduce the fuel flow, it doesn't on mine and I have 4 filters.
