power steering noise

I have a 2004 3500 4wd and it just started making a noise when I turn. Only happens that i can hear when turning slow. I was looking for where the power steering brackets break at to check if it was broken but couldn't find it. The noise it makes is a real fast hammering noise and I can feel it in the brake pedal. If you guys can help it would be great. Also where is the cheapest place to get a new fan and clutch. thanks for the help.

bringing this thread back to the top because mine just did the same thing. i have a 2005 CTD 4x4 2500. it has 40K miles. out of nowhere today, it just started making the very fast hammering noise when i try to turn the wheel without moving. it sounds pretty **** bad. it does it when driving as well, but you just do not hear it as much over road noise. the noise is also there to a lesser degree when i push hard on the brakes while stopped. i checked the fluid, and it is dead on the mark. this truck has no lift, and OEM tires.

did anyone confirm that the power steering pump is indeed kaput? if so, are they not warrantying this? i seem to see a bunch of threads about it.

surlynkid-check your track bar for movement-should not be any. also check steering shaft for movement/play. check ball joints for play and tie rods for play. common places to start for our trucks experiencing that type of noise.

well my problems just grew. i had checked everything and could not find an obvious problem.

tonight in the driveway, you could hear the final pop and it went. i now have no power steering and no power brakes. should that point me in one direction or another??

Probably need a new steering pump. I had mine replaced a little over a year ago.

One day it started making a racket especially when against the steering lock and I could feel a vibration in the brake pedal. The next day the pump died and blew fluid all over the place. I don't know all the details of the failure, I called the roadside assistance number and they sent a flatbed to take it to the dealership for repair. I didn't feel like trying to drive the truck too far without power steering and brakes.
