front end knockin but not in 4wd, U-Joint?

My O6 4wd with 142K has begun knocking from the drivers side front. I jacked it up, spun the wheels and the knock sounded as if it was coming from somewhere between the u-joint and front dif. Upon searching the forums I thought it might be the u joint, but when I engage the 4wd it goes away. Any thoughts, could this still be the U joints? Anyone experience anything similar? got to take it in Thursday for the multifunction indicator TSB so I was hoping to have an idea of what it might be prior to that

If you got 142k out of your stock u-joints...you're a lucky guy!! Most all of mine gave up the ghost starting around 30k miles. Still a pretty good chance your joints need to be replaced.

Does the knocking seem more pronounced while turning....any squeeking? Check your balljoints as well and make sure they aren't shot.

no additional knocking when the steering is at full lock. if its the u joints why would it cease when 4wd is engaged? shouldn't it continue to make the knocking sound?

I suppose if under load it might be quieter? If you look very closely, is there any reddish grit around the seals of the U joint? May be only on one cap.

I just started experiencing this exact same thing. Did anyone find what the problem was?
