opening the bottom of the airbox 06
I am trying to get some better airflow ( PO put a 5" exhaust from turbo back, but that only helps with the out flow). I want to keep the stock airbox because I got about a 4 yr supply of airfilters from my neighbor.
Can I drill a 3.5" hole in the bottom of the box put in about 2.5' of that flexible black drain pipe and run it down between the fender linner and the front bumper bracket. It would suck cold non engine compartment air. I could put a couple holes nesr the top of the tube to break suction if I got into water. I saw a kit like this for more than $100, I have that scrap tube in my shop?? Anybody done this?? |

Really, the stock airbox supplies plenty of air for a stock engine and tune. If you just like to tinker and modify things, no harm no foul, but if you believe it will improve performance or mileage, I think you will be wasting your time.

I painted mine black so it would be less visible when you take out the filter on the "Home Depot CIA" mod.

Just an interesting observation I had was that both my 2004.5 and my 2007 would pull the "Filter Minder" down about half way until I added a number of 1" holes inthe bottom of the box. And that was with used and new stock type filters as well as a AFE drop in replacement.
That said, if you have some supplies I would add the "Home Depot" cold air intake extension tube. |
