Oil Overfull -Remove it?
My oil was changed for the first time and I think by the stick it is a couple of quarts over maybe? Up on the stick about 1/2 in. above full mark!
How can I remove some oil.....or should I let it ride?
Thanks 8)

Some have posted that overfilled oil will cause more smell from the breather tube. If this is a concern to you then you should take some out. Last time I changed my oil I left it 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch below the full marks, still in the hatch mark area. I use Rotella and found the smell was less. I change the oil every 12k and it has not used any between changes. You'd probably hafta pull the drain plug and let some out unless you have one of the fast drain valves.

Exactly how much oil should be added during a filter and oil change....? 2003 Model year
If it is over full now...? No damage will occur other than the vent breather smelling up! 8)

It's pretty easy, but a little messy, to drain just a little if you want to. Unscrew the drain plug, move it a little out of the way, let a little oil drain (over your hand), then put it back in. Just do it cold so you don't get burnt by hot oil.

Slick trick: I've only heard about this one folks, and from a few others who said it really works.
Only try this after the vehicle has sit for an hour or so.
Take the oil filler cap off,
Fire up the shop-vac and have someone hold the hose (sealing as good as possible) tight to the valve cover.
Remove drain plug.
Break seal at hose/valve cover until "correct" amount has drained.
Re-apply vacuum at valve cover.
Reinstall drain plug.
Props to Illflem on TDR.

Slick trick? Nice Pun, Shovelhead! I think that method was seen on America's Funniest home videos.
I think Badunits method is the easiest, plus its the perfect time to do it with the oil cold and thick.

I've heard of the shopvac trick as a way to keep the oil in the pan if you need to take the drain plug out for some reason. Can't really think of many reasons why you'd have to do that, maybe if the plug got cracked or wasn't sealing correclty after an oil change and you wanted to replace it?

Per Cummins, the oil level should be checked on level ground AFTER it is up to temp. You should wait about five minutes after the engine is turned off to get the best and most accurate reading.
