Yeap, it is normal for it to do that. It takes a while for the oil to drain back to the oil pan. Just make sure the truck is on level ground when checking the oil. Truck will take 12 quarts or 3 gallons of oil. I usually fill up the new oil filter with oil and put the rest down it's neck.

From the way you are describing it you may be a little bit low on oil.

The area you are referring to is the "safe" point I believe instead of "save". From my owners manual readings this area between "min" and "max" equates to about 2qts. On my 03 CTD 12qts=3 gallons of oil, this usually puts me right at the "max" mark on the oil stick or at times slightly over, I have seen it slightly under the max mark when doing a oil change also. According to the owners manual oil is not to be added until the level is at or below the "min" mark, but some people will add oil even it says 1 quart low roughly mid-way point of the safe area, just to maintain "max" level. Checking the oil should always be done in a relatively level position and I do usually check mine after the truck has set over-night.

Hope this helps some.

Tony

On my 07 5.9 Mine reads on the "Max" line of your diagram most of the time... For whatever reason.... sometimes I ck it and it's between the "E" and MAX on your diagram.. About a half quart... I ck it at the same place all the time... Weird, but thats how it goes...
