Some of us have been changing at 3K, some at 5K, I've been 7K to 10K. The oil in mine is like tar because of the in cylinder EGT I guess, but the UOA's are very good so I'm not going to deviate. If you sleep better changing more often, I say go for it! Use a good filter, I think the Fleetguard LF16035 Stratopore is a good filter. After that, if you use dino oil you should be fine to 10,000 miles (at least I am) and if you use synthetic I suppose you can extend with UOA testing. Good luck! :) |
Alot of guys run oil analysis to dertermine that. I run Rotella T and I change my oil every 9k. Black oil is always a probleme because of the EGR stuff. the 5.9L has a "in-cylinder" EGR which is controlled by the timing and cam. It causes the oil to turn black pretty fast. This does not mean the oil needs to be changed though. The TBN is what determines that.
I am about to make the switch to full synthetic oil now that I have added a oil bypass and extend my change intervales out to 18k. |
I short cycle my oil changes just because of what has been said above with the in cylinder EGR or "Third Event" If you go back and read some of the post that deal with engine rebuilding because of internal problems with rings and scarres in the cylinder walls, suppositly caused by carbon sticking to the rings, you may also want to short cycle the oil change interval.
There are some on the fourm that drive other than CR diesels that don't believe this is problem. Unless I missed something over the last 10 years with oil classifications, the TBN number, (Total Base Number) was designed to neutralize the acids contained in the exhaust cycle that made it into the crankcase. Left untreated, the sufuric acid from the sulfur in the fuel would eat out the bearings in the crankcase. Since there is very little sulfur in our fuel these days, the TBN should be almost elimanated. CC was the designation for oil that was good at containing Carbon. (Carbon Collecting) We need that now. I'm sure there are other reasons for carbon on the rings that cause cylinder wear. But since we all know, the crankcase is full of it created by the third event, I don't think I want to run my oil beyond 5000 miles. I have no idea at what point there is to much carbon in the crankcase. I think this is a problem with the CR Cummins Engine that is known and no one will talk about it especially when you have a warranty problem and they blame it on everything but the third event. |
I change once a year or 5,000 miles. what ever i get to first.

tbn
tbn on my o4 was 6.63 12500 miles thinking of testing at 15000 on this oil and filter then ?? what tbn nomber is advised to change. this is amsoil 15/40 with 98500 miles on truck. started runing amsoil at 85000. changed filter after oil analyzers test sotex[duhhh][duhhh]

I have found that several manufacturers suggest a TBN no lower than 2 as per ASTM(D2896) or 1/3rd of the new oil TBN.
|
so how do i find out what the tbn's are in my oil.i have never even heard of these abbr you guys are throwing out,i usually change about 6000 and everythhing has been ok, i just pump a after market fass fuel system on my truck, will that have anything do do with more carbon or exhaust temps being higher cause of more fuel..is there a test i can buy to check the tbn's in my oil? and where do you guys get the better oil filters,i use fram, but was concidering starting to use wick from napa. i do add 2 strokeoil to my fuel for some lubrisity.

I think you may want to search each of the topics your asking about. There was recntly lots of info posted about each of them. Filters being one of the MAJOR issues you need to readup on!
The TBN is something you get when you do an oil analysis. Amsoil uses a place that includes it with your analysis, where Blackstone charges extra for it. |

As stated above, my interpetation was as it applied to an additive in the oil. After I read a few more posts, I figured you guys were talking about something else [duhhh] |
