OEM Conversion '05 2x4 to 4x4
 

I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 2x4 Diesel and am looking for a company who might covert this with OEM parts to a 4 x 4 - was told there is such a company in Indiana but have not been able to locate. I have recently moved to Michigan, before I did not need 4 wheel drive. Trading would cost me at least $10K and was told this could be done for around $5K.

Well I'm 73 years old and lived in MI. all my life and never needed a 4 wheel drive yet. Its not a real nessesity, just a I want one deal.

Sell the truck and buy a 4wd. No ifs ands or buts. If you actually did use OEM parts it would cost more than $5000.00 for all of the necessary components and the installation. A complete 9.5" front end is a pretty penny... as is the transfer case. Besides, the suspension is totally different on a 4wd versus a 2wd and would take lots and lots of time to "convert". Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you would be crazy to try the conversion. Your truck and your money... so do as you see fit. Sell the 2wd private party and take advantage of the current drop in the 05's thanks to the 06' deliveries.

$5k for a conversion that will probably de-value the truck by $5k sounds like a wash to me. Save the headaches and warranty, and get a new truck.

Thanks! I was pretty skeptical but the information came from a salesman at a local dealer so I thought it was worth taking a shot.

Even cheaper buy 4 snow tires and rims. Put 800lbs in the bed (strapped down of course). You'll go almost everywhere a 4x4 will. And save 9k. ;)

You can try calling Quigley. They are an aftermarket 4X4 conversion company. We use them to make the Ford Van ambulance chassis into four wheel drive and they give you a comprehensive warranty. I don't know if they will do a truck but it couldn't hurt to check. The cost starts at $9000.00 and there are a bunch of custom add ons.......Quigleymotors.com

Ive priced a front axle, transfer case, and both drive shafts for less then five thousand. Doesnt seem too far fetched.

Where they complete? Front axle you have the gears, this and that, then you have trailing arms, coil springs, track bar, steering upgrades, spring pockets, adapter for the transfer case, transfer case support, brakes, rotors, pads, all that's different. If you used oem parts, it would be well over 10,000 dollars.

Go aftermarket and it would start to be a little better for price, but agreed, better to take a hit and buy a 4x4, then to mod it and that. Unless it was a off road project.

brakes, rotors and pads are the same on a 2 wheel but the rest of the suspension is different unless you went with a straight leaf set up but its still a lot of money to throw around

I used a scrap yard directory and found a few complete front axel assemblies for less then two grand. Most of them are complete but if not they typically say on the descriptions whats wrong with them.
