Normal Cranking Time

I am new to the diesel world and have seen a few threads about hard starting.

What is the normal cranking time before the truck starts?

On mine I would guestimate that it takes 3-4 seconds of cranking before it starts. Is that normal?

If not, what all should I check besides the fuel filter, which I am going to change next week.

Chris

Mine takes maybe 1 second of cranking before it starts. 3-4 seconds seems kinda long IMO.

Mine takes about 3 seconds and thought it was the lift pump and had it checked and it passed.....no clue why it seems so long but it does.

ive got to pick up a new fuel filter, i checked codes and didn't have any. anyone else have any ideas? the truck runs great other than this, and i was just curious if it could be a sign of a problem to come in the future.

Sure sign of a in the tank lift pump going out is when you have 1/4 tank on the gauge and you just got stranded on the roadside. If you can fill it up and your truck restarts then your lucky until your the one under it dropping that full fuel tank that is. Man I've put so many in trucks like that. Even 1/4 and that thing is a pain. If you live in the north even in the winter if your grid heater works it will crank maybe 2 or 3 sec's. I had one truck that the turbo howled like crazy when it was below 0 until it warmed up then ran just fine. We've never heard it this summer but I'm sure it will be howling this winter like it did last.

Well, I changed my fuel filter today, the old one didn't look bad. It seems like it MIGHT be starting a lil faster now. it cranks 4 times and the 5th it starts. my crank, i mean a "chug"...haha

so it goes: chug, chug, chug, chug, vroom...

I know you all will love my description...

Can you post a sound or video clip of your truck starting?

Mine takes about 1 1/2 seconds or 2-3 chugs then vrooooom! A little longer if I don't give the LP any time to get pressure up before cranking. Craig

on a side note, i ordered some issopro gauges and a triple A piller mount from geno's so in a week or so i will be able to check the vitals...

where does everyone tap into for the fuel pressure? is there a sensor to tap into or would it be best to get the fuel filter top with the fitting in it?

Listened to the clip and it sounds about normal to me. I'd say it only cranked maybe 2 seconds.

Mine doesn't chug-chug-chug often enough, I like it when it does that. It's always a soft start, but on rare occasions I'll get the chug-chug-chug, sounds like a steam powered train as it starts to roll.
