No dealer needed for fast idle

I was always told that fast idle had to be programmed at the dealer. I was surprised to find that it does not. I tried it the other day and it worked. Never had it programmed at the dealer. I was also glad to find the article in the DTR Wiki that tells how to turn off the back up honk and seat belt chime (did'nt care about the seat belt chime as I always wear my seat belt, but the horn honk drove me nuts) . Maybe this is old news, but I just wanted to share. Thanks DTR!!!

Fast Idle - Start truck (do not push brake pedal), turn on cruise control, press the set button, idle will increase on its own after a second or so, then use the accel and decel buttons to adjust the idle speed.

Yes, it was programmed at the dealer and has to be turned on by a dealer tool to work.

The activation of the radio behaviour, head light bahviour, idle up, etc, is all done as part of the dealer prep. If the main attribute is not activated in the ECU nothing will allow the idle up feature to work.

Interesting...... Would it be a Laramie Package deal? My truck is a Laramie as well as my buddy's truck. Neither one of us have ever had it programmed at the dealer but it works on both trucks.

You have a Smarty listed in your sig. I am pretty sure that it turns on the fast idle feature.

True, but my buddy's truck is bone stock. He bought it new and never had the dealer program it. Strange. Maybe the dealer did it for him and never told him.

Its in the ECU and available on all trucks, irregardless of package. It is the standard PTO idle feature that Cummins puts into all their software and ECU's. As part of the delaer prep when the truck arrives at the dealer a lot of these features are turned on and activated. The trucks are delivered in a minimal mode with all the options shut off so the batteries don't go dead in transit. The delaer activates and turns a lot this on when they get the trucks. As a rule, the auto trucks have the idle up feature enabled and activated at dealer delivery. The manual trucks don't unless the clutch switch is installed.

Smarty just activates when it loads. Doesn't care whether it was already active as it is in most cases. If the option has not been enabled by dealer prep then the Smarty can not\will not activate it. It is a 2 step process to enable and activate the PTO option.

Smarty does it all in one step. No issues. You can actually load a Smarty tune and then go back to stock and the feature will still be enabled. It will save a step of going to the dealer.

Makes sense!

This is not exactly true. The 04' truck needed to have a new flash in order for the High idle to work along with it to be enabled. Had it done to my truck at the dealer. The 05' and up trucks did not. The Smarty will update your truck to the latest flash and enable the feature. Most dealers do not enable to feature unless your request it or pay for it later. 03' trucks will not work due to the ECM.

I have a QuadZilla on a 01 and it does not work with the cruise control but it does if it is cold or you leave it idle for more than 5 min.

How long can you leave the fast idle on to warm up the truck? Does Dodge have a time recommendation?

No time limit but you don't want to idle alot. Not good on the engine. It also works good to cool down the truck with the A/C running in the Summer.

As of Dec 3 2003 the Dodge based flashes for the idle up feature and others were standard and delivered to the customer as such. So, yes what said was entirely true. The dealer prep is where most of these features get activated. Day time head lights is an available feature but it is not manadated here in the US so we don't see it.

That covered the bulk of MY04. The early 04 trucks usually needed just a flash plus having it enabled and activated, which would have been done by the dealer with dealer prep. The actual ability for the flash to work is covered by ECU numbers so it is not year specific. Yes, some dealers made you pay for that, others did not.

There is and has been a PTO function in the Cummins software all the way back the MY98.5 to do the idle up. Dodge just did not choose to include it in their versions of the software until Dec 2003 and activate as such with the appropriate safeguards. An 03 is entirely capable of doing idle up, and does, if you have the correct controller to access the PTO funtion.

If you have the correct speed control on an 03 a new ECU will allow it work with the Dodge functions thru the CC buttons as well.
