New to the forum 2006 2500 - w/many questions.

Hello,
I just got a 2006 2500 ctd 4x4 quad cab short bed with 68,000 miles. I usually pride myself in being very picky and usually can pick out any problems. I purchased this truck from a lithia dealership, and it was VERY clean. I looked everywhere for dirt and found none. I looked for any play in the drive-train, and found no leaks.

I really like the truck and the power it has, although I am starting to get frustrated with the truck and some problems. OH I did not get the warranty, but there is a 60 day 3000 mile warranty.

Some of the problems; 1.Ball Joints, 2.Leaking front output seal on the transfer case, 3.gear selector does not show it go into 1st (the tranny is in 1st though) the square just goes away and then it does not always show it go into park (again square just goes away), 4.there is a orange rubber/silicone hose for the cooling system located above the turbo that leaks, 5.I don't think that the TSBs have been updated, 6.there is a small button on the driver side column near the emergency/parking break that I cannot figure out, 7.what looks to be water stains on all the seats (which from the looks on this board it is common, I brought this up when I bought the truck), I was not able to check the breaks because the key to the locking lug nuts was not there. Note: they said that it was odd because they would have had to pull the tires to rotate and do the safety inspection so they ordered me a new key. I wanted to rotate the tires because they need it, so to me it looks as if they did not do a safety inspection and are lying to me about rotating the tires!

I am afraid of finding more. The warranty says it covers "all systems are covered with the exception of wear and tear items, ..."

Do you think that the ball joints, and seal would be covered? I am really tired from dealing with this truck and my wife has been ****** about buying it and we are both ****** at the dealership.

What should I do?

It sounds like you feel that the dealer mislead you and/or did you wrong. Why did you buy the truck if you knew the dealer had not done some of the things they claimed to have done.

I'm sure that some folks on here will be able to educate you on the dodge warranty and TSB stuff.

The Cummins you bought has a money pit wrapped around it. There are plenty of superior aftermarket products that will address some of the bigger issues you listed that are wear items. Looks like its time to get dirty and and start mod'n your truck to increase its dependability.

If you got a good price for it then just get it fixed. If you now suffer from buyers remorse because you think you paid too much you will never be happy until you get it fixed (and maybe not even then) so either take it to the dealer and get it fixed or do it yourself. Post each problem as its own thread and see what you get for a response on what to do about it.

Some of the problems;

1.Ball Joints, Get some Dynatrac, XRF or if you've got the cash Carli

2.Leaking front output seal on the transfer case, Replace the seal

3.gear selector does not show it go into 1st (the tranny is in 1st though) the square just goes away and then it does not always show it go into park (again square just goes away), Not a clue. Could be the linkage needing an adjustment?

4.there is a orange rubber/silicone hose for the cooling system located above the turbo that leaks, Not sure of an orange hose on my truck above the turbo. can you get a pic?

5.I don't think that the TSBs have been updated, Why do you think that?

6.there is a small button on the driver side column near the emergency/parking break that I cannot figure out, Not a clue. Its not stock

7.what looks to be water stains on all the seats (which from the looks on this board it is common, I brought this up when I bought the truck), Yup. Common. 06 trucks have crappy cloth seats. Get some seat covers.

I was not able to check the breaks because the key to the locking lug nuts was not there. Note: they said that it was odd because they would have had to pull the tires to rotate and do the safety inspection so they ordered me a new key. I wanted to rotate the tires because they need it, so to me it looks as if they did not do a safety inspection and are lying to me about rotating the tires! If you want to get the lock of that bad you can sacrifice a cheap socket. Hammer it on and put some muscle into it. Get 4 spare lug nuts to replace the key nuts to tear up.

I am afraid of finding more. The warranty says it covers "all systems are covered with the exception of wear and tear items, ..." Stop looking or better yet, look before you buy

Do you think that the ball joints, and seal would be covered? I am really tired from dealing with this truck and my wife has been ****** about buying it and we are both ****** at the dealership.Without looking at the warranty/contract not a clue if they are covered.

What should I do? You sound as if you think the truck was misrepresented. Did you not see these items before you agreed to buy it? Were these items not present then? If you like the truck enough these are small items. If you don't take it back and ask for a refund.

Like Andy said^^.

You want to find ALL of the issues and get as many fixed as possible before your 3/3000 ends. I do hope the dealer helps out at least on some of it but what you have is the usual items to fix and/or repair at 68,000 miles on a truck that does not appear to have been taken care of, but not the end of the world.

1. What makes you think the ball joints are shot? They have some play in them from new.
2. Dealer should fix.
3. Dealer should fix.
4. Easy fix, dealer should fix.
5. Dealer should do required TSB's and updates.
6. Post a picture.
7. Clean and treat seats.

Take this one step at a time. Make a list and bring it back to get what you can fixed. Post the other items one at a time in order of importance here and we can help you through it. Even if you don't do the work yourself, members in your area may be able to guide you to a reputable shop.

Good luck and don't get too down, cowboy up!

Thanks.

I do really like the truck and I do realize that most are just little maintenance items. I just question some of them.

Nice truck! Looks like Grapevine Lithia. None of your issues are major and certainly manageable. Too bad she didn't like red, I'm selling my 06 with 41k. Take it back and buy mine! Good luck

The hose over the turbo is a common leak area. There is a new/improved hose and clamps for that spot. That said many people just tighten it and it is fine.

The button and LED are not stock so it could be anything but you are most likely correct that it is part of an aftermarket security system. It could also be the problem with your shift indicator. If you have no manual or instructions for the add on then I would suggest you try to remove it from the truck otherwise it will just be a source of gremlins that will drive you nuts.

Hi , I'm new here too, I'm about to buy a 2005 2500 diesel. Maybe today? It has 110,00 miles but appeares to be in pretty good shape. The thing that is very questioable is the overhead MPG readings. The thing says I'm getting 29 mpg??? I tried babing it after that to see how much I could get and I managed to get it to hold 32 mpg doing about 35 mph. Is that anywhere near accurate ????I realize nobody accually drives like I was butI couldn't believe it was doing that. Does that need to get fixed or do these trucks get that mpg . Thanks. I'll check back after work? I appreciate all replies! Never owned a diesel truck.
Boy. I had the hatdest job of finding a user id that wasn't takin

Zeppe807 nice truck!

I'll take a look at the tube there on my truck and see what clamps are on there. I haven't found mine leaks.

If you did buy it from a Lithia dealer I feel sorry for you based on the Lithia dealers in Oregon.

If its the Grapevine Dodge right here on William D Tate you should be in good hands. They're the ones who price matched the upgraded steering when I took my truck in. Anyway, like any dealership go in knowing your stuff so you're not pushed around. But they have treated me right. There is a difference between the service guys and the sales guys though.

No, I'm not buying it from them. This is on a used truck lot. Why do those overhead units give the wrong mpg? Anyone know?
